It's been a while since I checked in. Between going out of town and the Jewish holidays, it's been hard to keep up with all my emails and forums.
My trip to Orlando for a conference went well. I was able to drive easily, even with the surgical shoe on my foot, with the help of cruise control. I had never used cruise control before, but it was a big help in this case. The conference ended on a Saturday night, but I stayed over to see friends in Orlando. We had a delicious lunch at Emeril's at Universal, and then saw Serenity. After that I hopped in the car and headed home.
Rosh Hashana was the week following my conference. The day after Rosh Hashana, I had my last visit with the podiatrist. He told me my toe was "75% healed" and gave me instructions to walk normally (a relative term, I quickly found), wearing sneakers with a roomy toebox, but not to jump, run, hop, or dance for two weeks. Ha! As if I could! Even two weeks later, my foot is swollen, although better, and I am just starting to walk normally. I have only one pair of sneakers I can get my foot into with any kind of comfort.
Following that last podiatrist's visit, I flew up to New England to spend some time with Foamy. We spent two nights with an old family friend in NJ, then went in to NY to see "Avenue Q" with my nephew. It was a lot of fun.
Then home again for Yom Kippur and the rest of the fall Jewish holidays (still ongoing). We are now in the middle days of Sukkot (translated as "Tabernacles" in the Christian Bible), during which we build small temporary huts in which we eat our meals.
We are somwhat nervously following the progression of Hurricane Wilma and wondering if it will hit us or not.
As far as my foot, I have started walking a little bit each day, just 10-15 minutes, so far, around the house, and following that with the regular strengthening exercises I used to do. I feel that I need to get used to walking again and build up my stamina before I can return to work.
That's it for now. Hope everyone is doing well. "Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?"<i></i>
