OK, I know you never budge on the 50 pg rule.

However, please consider that this is a 5000 pg saga. So, you have only seen 1 percent. I wish you would make a....3 percent rule. A good author should be able to hook you after 3 percent

I actually read perhaps 150-200 pages of AGOT, then put it aside for six weeks. Guess I was not hooked, though I considered that the writing "flowed well". Later, I picked it up again. He hooked me at that point.

After reading all of AGOT I could certainly see why all the details in the first part were needed.

It gets much, much easier to keep track of when you form attachments to the characters. I am no spring chicken. I remember wondering if I could keep track of it all in the early going, but I surely can. Forty and fifty something folks read these books quite a lot.

You are not supposed to know who is bad and good. Most characters have both in them. But..hey..I still think there are definite good and bad guys.

To answer two concerns at once, Hunter Rose has some very excellent chapter summaries up on the web (they are linked from somewhere on my site asoiaf.tripod.com). They can help you keep track if you forget, and help you recall things before you begin a new book.

I've only read AGOT 1.75 times, ACOK once and ASOS once. Not much of a re-reader I guess.

BC7, Lewis and Tolkien were great friends until they fell out? I have never heard of this. Can you provide more information? (I've read a couple of Lewis biographies.)

Gosh I don't know what to add! LE must have great shorthand skills and must have rushed to her laptop before I got home! I tryed to write something at 8pm last night but my comp froze on me. Probably a good thing as I'm basically a ASOIAF virgin, being 150 pages into A Game of Thrones. About the only things I recognized from the reading were Tywin, Lannisters, Sunspear and Dorne. So maybe I can be a bit of a "color" commentator...I was outside, smoking, when I saw Mr. Martin walking from The Owl Cafe to the Howard Johnson hotel. His impressive entourage included Melinda Snodgrass (of STNG fame, we share the same chiropractor, btw), Jane Lindskold, Yvonne Coates and, I assume, Parris. I was extremely impressed by the reading! Martin's attention to details and such complex plotlines are outstanding! Very lilting, and poetic--he is an extremely good reader--seeming to become the different characters. The blood oranges took me back to the beginning of Gregory Benford's "Second Foundation" book. And the line "...like a Giant's Droemmond that washed ashore and turned to stone" sounded like part of The One Tree by Stephen R. Donaldson. My favorite line has got to be "Death had come to Dorne on raven wings" and I had to raise my eyebrows at "...a Lannister always keeps his word." I talked to Mr. Martin breifly, as he signed my AGoT, we talked about NJ, as I am originally from there too, told me he has lived in Santa Fe since 1979 and was so engrossed in ASOIAF and the Wild Cards bunch that no new Sci-Fi project was on the concievable horizon. My only previous exposure to Martin was one his Sci-Fis. Thank you LE! This was the first Con I've ever attended and you made me feel right at home. The audience got a kick out of LE, and another lady, modeling their Winterfell T-shirts. I've been to Donaldson, Vardeman, Saberhagen, Plath, Momaday and Hillerman readings but this one was far and away THE best! ..Well back to AGoT, I have alot of reading to do to get to AFFC--I can't wait!!!

Lol. LE, you are too late, for I think that King Theoden has already been budged. I cannot remember but BC7 and I were rather persistant in the matter. Anyways like Danlo's board? *Heckle Heckle*

LindaElaine -

Sorry I didn't get back to you - missed your thread. This is mentioned in Carpenter's bio of Tolkien IIRC. Tolkien took a dislike towards Lewis' use of Christian allegory in the Narnia Tales, and Lewis was quite vocal about not liking Tolkiens need to introduce Elves into all his stories. Their relationship cooled somewhat once these respective points of view were aired at Inklings meetings.

Wow the Northern Raven is getting popular! I don't think King T ever was budged--he sent me his copy of AGoTs and I enjoyed it immensely! There r some lulls in Clash--but they r pretty cool lulls--I'm at pg. 360 and I can tell all sorts of intense stuff is about 2 happen!

Had I been frequenting the ASOIAF board I would know this by now. In my net travels I keep cing dif folks, including Amazon, selling it but I thought there were delays.... And now Danlo looked in that direction, too. He remembered that snowy owls mate in the darkest part of deep winter, and so along with this beautiful white bird perched in a tree a hundred feet away, he turned to face the sea as he watched and waited.

Ahira, Ahira, he called out silently to the sky. Ahira, AhiraEdited by: danlo60 at: 1/13/03 5:37:14 pm

No, Danlo, A Feast For Crows hasn't even been fully written yet. Go check out Martin's website! He's sort of chuckling at Amazon and its ilk for having page counts and a release date for a book that's not even finished!
It was supposed to be released this spring...I am personally thinking summer now. Ankh-Morpork people considered that spelling was a sort of optional extra. They believed in it the same way they believed in punctuation; it didn't matter where you put it, so long as it was there.~Terry Pratchett

Yes, and a new Hedge Knight story this summer, too, in Legends 2! I love the Hedge Knight!!!! Ankh-Morpork people considered that spelling was a sort of optional extra. Bubonicon is 4 days away! I'll be back with a detailed report on George's read from A Feast for Crows by Saturday!!! And now Danlo looked in that direction, too. He remembered that snowy owls mate in the darkest part of deep winter, and so along with this beautiful white bird perched in a tree a hundred feet away, he turned to face the sea as he watched and waited.

This question may be real out of place, but here goes anyway. I August at the Chicago WizardWorld Convention, there was a comic book group there promoting comics based on GRR Martin's writings and completely approved by the author. Anyone know anything about this? taraswizard
