Another dangerously hot day in the Great Lakes area today. It was so bad yesterday that the county opened up cooling centers in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, with free city bus service to reach them. It is not only scorchingly hot, but it is extrememy humid as well. And the buildings in this part of the world are built with the brutal winters in mind, and are designed to keep heat in, and most older houses do not have central air conditioning.

Thank God a storm front is due through tomorrow, and will take us from around 100 degrees to about 70! ******************************************************

Geez Albq must be blessed or something--we've had constant in the 80s temps with low 60s at night and moonsoon rains every night. Yeah, the rest of the country is burning alive. Sorry we haven't sent bigRed's card out yet-but it IS coming... *****

Yeah well there's no sign of relief in good ol Jersey.:">

We've been in the upper-upper-upper 90's for a few days now and looks like it'll stay that way until the weekend. Hopefully we'll see 90 degrees by Friday or Sat! <i></i>

The cold front should be hitting us in Michigan sometime tomorrow, bringing great relief. Hopefully it will hit you guys on the coast shortly thereafter.

I cannot wait - it really has my asthma going!

Tonight they told everyone to stop using any optional major appliances like dishwashers and laundry machines, as we are really stressing the electrical grid. We are starting to have blackouts in the metro Detroit area, and there are pockets of a couple thousand houses here and a couple of thousand houses there without power. ******************************************************

We've had a big cool down (altho it didn't really get that hot way up here) and it's really helped with the fire that was burning. All those evacuated were let back to their homes and Russell had no problem getting back up here.

And yes!! Children are the most precious gifts in the world! *********

Aren't they????

The storms are nearly here - temps will be dropping something like thirty degrees as soon as they roll through! ******************************************************

Ha Duchess, I can't wait for it to warm up. Only a month from spring, and yesterday it snowed in parts of Jo'burg for the first time in either 10 or 19 years, (depending on who you believe and where in it you live). Not what you would call snow though, but damn freezing for us.

Hey danlo, you mind if I ask Jay to steal that fencing emoticon for the Watch? I like it.

I told Jay a long time ago to steal anything he wants! To make a long story short: Mhoram (our co-admin) used to run the Endless Shadows site (which is now our Zelazny forum) and he installed that emoticon there-way before it was ever here. The new sunset is kinda weird-but I wanted to brighten the place up a bit. I love the new Gen. Fantasy and Simmons backgrounds-but I've been searching everywhere and I'll be dammed if I can find a CSS, Java or HTML code that will center them without repeating. The Shrike painting, for example, would look stunning if it were centered with, say, a black background behind it. If anyone knows the proper code PLEASE let me know.

I wish we had all you folks here on a regular basis! *****

I'll ask our IT guys here at work if they know anything about it. I like the sunset, but to be honest, dark backgrounds make it easier to read...I struggle to on some of the index pages.

I often resolve to visit more, but I'm afraid that if I get as hooked on it as I am on the Watch, I really will lose my job.

Hell, some days I don't even make it out of the Hegemony there. But there are some great threads here too...I'll do my best to take advantage of them. And it's always nice to have somewhere else to meet up when the Watch is down/problem-ridden/whatever.

(EDIT: IT Guy says the only way that he can think of is to put it in a cell that's the exact size of the background image. Don't think that's gonna be workable here though I fear.) ____________________________________

Any suggestion is welcome-and the sunset is totally transitory... *****

I haven't been by for a while. Scheduling myself for two per diem jobs, one day shift and one night shift, has proven a bit tricky. I inadvertantly scheduled myself to have only one day off at a time for the last two or three weeks. I am a bit exhausted, to say the least. Thank goodness I am off for the next 4 days. I will enjoy the chance to rest and get some work done around the house.

Danlo, you asked about Foamy. She is doing very well, about to enter her junior year of college. She has been spending the summer helping to edit a logic textbook with her logic profs, and seems to be really enjoying the work.

Since she doesn't have to study after work, she finally got around to finishing Runes and called me up to rant about it afterwards.

And I also got her to read The Riddlemaster. She really liked Deth.

Before I go back to reading my accumulated email, I want to give a big welcome to Av!
Nice to see you at the Hangar.

Thanks MsMary. I've actually been a Member here for nearly two years now. (I'm ashamed to admit that, in the sense that you'd never have guessed.)

Sounds like you're having a rough time...hell, I can barely manage one job. Good luck to ya, and enjoy your well-deserved rest.

Having only 17 posts makes you still a newbie. "Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?"<i></i>
