Children are the greatest gift in the world!
As an experiment, we are homeschooling my younger son this week, even though school is not in session. He is a late fall baby, and nearly a year younger than most of his classmates. He wants to repeat eighth grade, though he was on the honor roll all year last year. The school district is not too happy with that idea. So his choice is to go on to high school and graduate at 17 like his brother (and we're having all sorts of weird problems with that like setting up bank accounts for him to use while Bigred is away at school), having him repeat the grade and have the same classes and teachers he had last year and passed with flying colors; or home schooling for one year and letting him start high school next year when he will be the same age as his classmates.
So we have him reading a book about the American Civil War (along with Shaara's Gods and Generals as a supplement); reading the first chapter of the Iliad (complete with map study of where Troy was and what might have actually causedd a war there - i.e. control of key water trade routes and a smattering of Greek mythology); and a big astronomy text book. We do not have an appropraite math book, so are blowing that off for this experimental week, but if we decide to do this for real we will add algebra.
So far he is loving it, and says he has learned more in one morning than in a usual week of school.
Lord, this is going to be a very long week. ******************************************************
