The prices on laptops are getting better. The little store at work (a Veteran's PX) has fairly powerful laptops now for about $500, tax free (since it is a federal government store, there is no state sales tax, and there is no federal sales tax in the US).

That is less than half what I paid for my older son's laptop a couple of years ago when he went to university, and a more powerful computer to boot.

So in two years, the power has gone up, and the price has fallen by more than half.

When younger son goes to university, I hope the quality keeps going up, and the price keeps plunging!

But, right now we're $50 short for rent, which must be paid by Tuesday, or late fees are applied. Even a cheap used laptop (which the one at home was, five years ago) is beyond our reach right now...

If we can't get the laptop functioning, we do have several older PC's, and Beorn's old laptop. But...

I don't know if our DSL, which we just got a few months ago, will work with any of them. They're all Windows 98, and much slower processors than the laptop usually is.

Ah well...I'm sure it'll work on '98 anyway.
