Sky & I were chatting about The Mothman Prophesies, that we both watched over the weekend, on the Movies thread and while we both REALLY liked the movie--Sky's not all that crazy about Richard Gere-so, 4 some odd reason, I decided 2 place my rebuttal/agreement here on the Actor's page. W/the xception of Mr. Jones, 1 of the best movies ever made, the "vehicle" of the movie has made Gere's career, not the other way around. His acting wasn't bad @ all in Sommersby and An Officer and a Gentleman--but it may have something 2 do with his eyes that make him seem a little flat. His eyes always seem 2 b half closed like he's smirking @ u w/ this "I'm beyond u, I know I'm a star" kinda punky attitude. I was blown away by his performance in Mr. Jones and he did an admirable job in The Mothman Prophesies--but again it's more of the "vehicle" of the movies that make his career. Maybe, like Keanu Reeves is, he just plain lucky (or smart, who knos) he gets great scripts and great co-stars. Take Mothman 4 xample: it's the plot that freaks us out and holds our attention much more than Gere's acting--thrown in some fine performances by Laura Linney, and especially Will Patton--and boom great movie. In An Officer and a Gentleman we have a very good script w/killer performances by Debra Winger, David Keith and Louis Gosset Jr. Sommersby was a great story, and Gere's character was 1 of the best things in the movie, but an all-star cast made it so. Pretty Woman: Julia Roberts made the movie what it was, sometimes I even 4get Gere was in it. American Gigilo: Lauren Hutton, good story, but I always 4get Gere was in that movie I always think it's some other, semi-unimpressive, actor like Mark Harmon. Well u get the ideal..B4 I finish let me back up Sky's opinion a little more: Gere went along way in making Mr. Jones great, but remember it was XTREMELY well writen, great cinematography, great direction, very good soundtrack & Lena Olin's acting was outstanding (not 2 hard on the eyes either, grrrrr...). Don't get me wrong I think Richard Gere is a very good actor--like in that wild movie where Edward Norton stole the show, playing the MPD kid-murderer and he played the Atty. (name escapes me right now) I just don't think he's a great actor-i.e: some1 like Harrison Ford or Sean Connery who commands the screen.
