My understanding is that ethanol is not really a viable replacement for fossil fuels at this time. I have seen a number of news articles on this topic, but don't have the links handy right now. Maybe I'll take a look later. "Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?"<i></i>

Recently, I read that we could put every acre that's currently growing corn, switchgrass, etc. into the production of ethanol and it would still only account for 12% of the country's energy needs. <i></i>

I think that bio-diesel is probably going to be the next stop-gap, as it's manufacturable from a far wider range of waste products.

But true freedom from petrol dependancy is only going to come with an energy revolution.

Substitutes and alternatives are widely available, some guy here in SA has invented a way of making solar panels without silicon, and which are recyclable into more solar panels once they lose efficiency.

But people aren't using these alternatives enough. It's still too much of an effort.
