What is a HEA?

Bujold is one of my favorite writers. I love her well developed characters, and their well developed relationships. Her books often make me laugh and often make me cry.

I have been reading Erikson's Blood Follows, a little novella that tells a part of the backstory of two powerful necromancers we meet in his brick of a novel, Memories of Ice. In this, we see how they hired their very put-upon man servant. ******************************************************

Thank you, Taras. I had never heard that abbreviation before.

I have been reading Erikson's The Healthy Dead, the second of his novellas about those two evil necromancers we meet in Memories of Ice along with their long suffering man servant. This book reveals a very dark and very funny sense of humor. The king of a small and isolated city is a major league health nut. He passes all sorts of laws and provides enforcement for all of his citizens to also be health nuts. This makes most of the people very miserable. They hire the necromancers, evil dudes both, to take care of the problem of too much health. : : : : ******************************************************

I have been rereading the Temeraire books by Naomi Novik; they have apparently overtaken the Protector of the Small Young Adult fantasy series by Tamora Pierce as my "comfort" read.

Protector of the Small had been my comfort read since two Christmases ago, when I had a falling out with a friend who was very important to me; perhaps it is a good sign that my mind is finally moving on to a different set of comfort books. ******************************************************

I will be rereading those as well sometime in August or September; I also wish to refresh my mind before the release of the third book. Hopefully we can have a nice discussion of them in the Wolfe forum?

I am working my self up to starting House of Chains by Steven Erikson. This is the fourth of his huge novels set in the world of the Malazan Empire (there are also two novellas). I needed to take a bit of a break after the third, Memories of Ice (a true cinder block of a book) simply to mentally process and digest for awhile. The author is an anthropologist and archaeologist; his books are filled with various tribes and peoples as well as many humanoid races - all of them with their own customs and magics and ways of looking at the world. ******************************************************

Yes, I am now officially reading the cinder block known as House of Chains.

Loved the prologue. Is the main character who appears in it one the greatest badasses in all of fantasy or what???? (don't want to be more specific due to spoilers; I do not think this book is out in the US yet). ******************************************************

Dragonfly in Amber left some questions as to exactly what had happened to some of the characters adter the battle of Culloden in Scotland. Therefore I am now reading the third book, Voyager to find out what heppened. ******************************************************

After taking a break with a historical novel and a mystery, I am now reading the fourth Outlander book by Gabaldon; called The Drums of Autumn. Some of the characters are living in our world in the late 1960's; other characters have become settlers in the mountain wilderness of North Carolina in the 1760's. Since that is quite near where some of my ancestors lived in the same era I am finding those parts to be truly fascinating.

Mention keeps being made of "Regulators" in North Carlina - those were people of that era who despised British rule and taxes and became sort of revolutionary/terrorist types. Yes, in the real world that included some of my crazy German ancestors. Henry Harman (whose father came from Germany in the 1720's and whose last name was once Herrman) started out as an officer in the colonial militia in Virginia, then in North Carolina. He broke his vows to George III and became on of those Regulators! ******************************************************

I am now about halfway through with the next cinder block of a book in Gabaldon's Outlander series, called The Fiery Cross. Things in early 1770's North Carolina are really starting to heat up politically, and the royal governor keeps calling up the colonial militia to deal with the Regulators. It is very interesting for me to read this, as some of my ancestors lived in the same county that the fictional Frasers do (Rowan County), and these same ancestors went from being officers in the colonial militias to being among the leaders of the Regulators! ******************************************************

I'm on the last Galbaldon cinder block now, A Breath of Snow and Ashes. The American Revolution has come!

According to Gabaldon's website, there will eventually be one or possibly two more books in this series. She is apparently taking a break from it for now, though, to write mysteries. I can see why she would need to recharge her creative batteries after these six huge books! ******************************************************

Yesterday I read that old classic Halloween story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. What a wonderful seasonal treat!

I am now in the middle of rereading one of my favorite fantasy novels ever ~ Roger Zelazny's Halloween story A Night in the Lonesome October. It has everyone's favorite monsters - Frankenstein, Dracula, the Wolfman, etc. - throw in Sherlock Holmes and the elder gods from Lovecraft - and this wonderful little story is told by Jack the Ripper's dog!! Great stuff. Just absolutely great stuff!

I reread it every year in October. ******************************************************

I'm reading a Zelazny right now, but I guess it's more sci-fi-The Dream Master that you sent me duchy. I'm having a little bit of a hard time getting into it but I'll give it another shot tonight. *****
