I wiped out this topic yesterday and am reviving it now. Mainly because I neglected to include The Scholars Tale.

I thought The Scholars Tale was was touching, The Poets complex and beautiful--but the romantic in me had to pick the Consuls something about dolphins, the sea and the lightyears altered loveaffair touched the romantic in me--

So now your options are, of course:
The Priests Tale
The Soldiers Tale
The Poets Tale
The Detectives Tale
The Scholars Tale
The Consuls Tale

And all of the tales become beautifully knitted together in the Endymion books.
It's hard to choose just one -- different elements in each tale appeal to me. The romantic love, as you mentioned, in the counsel's tale, the bad*ss buttkicking in the soldier's tale, the love of a parent for a child in the scholar's tale...and the other three are particularly important for the second half of the series in the Endymion books (but I will not give out spoilers here!) Ankh-Morpork people considered that spelling was a sort of optional extra. If I had to choose, I'd pick the Consul's tale. The dolphins and the relativity love story.

My favorite is the priest tale, you CANNOT stop reading it until it's over, and then you CANNOT stop thinking about the irony the whole story is. I also loved at first Sol's Wientraub an the consul ones, they made me cry and most of all, think.
I must confess at first I bored a bit with the other three, but I ended up loving them as well at my second lecture of the book. <i></i>
