Well, I began Game of Thrones yesterday, and I gave it my 50-page test. I am totally confused. After 50 pages and probably as many characters introduced, I have absolutely no desire to finish the book. I'm sure Martin is worth reading, but at this point in life, I really can't give anyone more than 50 pages to hook me. I have begun reading the long sought after Tunnel in the Sky. It may not be as intricate as Martin, but Heinlein doesn't take as much effort to enjoy. (I am willing to let someone adopt my paperback copy of Game of Thrones) Arise now, Riders of Théoden!Let horse be bridled, horn be sounded!Forth Eorlingas!

I appreciate your tenacity, King Mudd, but there are just too many characters introduced. I had no idea what was going on; who were the good guys; who were the bad guys; who's getting married but doesn't want to; just too much for my 50-year-old mind to handle I take your word that it's a super story--I just couldn't get into it (and I NEVER budge on my 50 page rule--I believe an author should be able to hook me by then). Thanks for the encouragement. I'm sure Danlo will give it a much better read. Arise now, Riders of Théoden!Let horse be bridled, horn be sounded!Forth Eorlingas!

OK. Fine.

But I will say that the best(one of actually) thing about ASOIAF is that the characters aren't good or bad, they are somewhere in the middle. What crazy person watches soccer at four in the mornin?

Much as I like Jerome (King Theo Chief Horse Mucker) he's gone and done me head in re GRRM. All I can say is it's a damn good job I didn't persuade him to buy Erikson's first book. He'd have banned me from Gap of Rohan by now.

First 50 pages. Cuh ! With me its first 75 pages Aure entuluva !

Nay, never would I ban someone for suggesting a book, only to find that I didn't like it. I appreciate the advice. Not every one likes the same things. Actually, I like books that don't require a whole lot of thinking. I believe books can be enjoyed on a variety of levels. With Donaldson, I find that some people get a whole lot deeper into his books than I do, yet, I probably like them just as well. I have little time to enjoy new books, and I don't want to spend it trying to figure out all the characters (as necessary as they may be).
I certainly wouldn't get out of sorts with anyone if they failed to like two of my favorite books in this world:
Watership Down and Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. Has anyone read these? Arise now, Riders of Théoden!Let horse be bridled, horn be sounded!Forth Eorlingas!

I agree with all you say King Theoden, and I would add that it would sure be a damn boring world if we all liked the same stuff eh ?

Watership Down - read it many years ago. Fiver and all the Gang. Good book. Have you read any of the Duncton Wood Tales, Moles instead of Rabbits, you might well like it. Aure entuluva !

I had a limited childhood (WHAAA!) just Narnia and Stuart Little--but James and the Giant Peach was SO cool!!! Lots of Dog stories; Bob, Son of Battle, White Fang, The Bars Sinister, Call of the Wild. NIHM was very good thou! When I was 4 in Portugal there was a really cool series of books called Nobby-a British cartoon series--I really dug the little guy! especially his car... The power of ahimsa is not just the readiness to die. It is the willingness to live. To live utterly without fear - this is a fearsome thing. Edited by: danlo60 at: 7/18/02 3:57:11 pm

When I was knee high to a grasshopper I was brought a book called Elidor by Alan Garner. A tale involving 4 kids, Celtic Myths, Sword, Stone, Spear, Cauldron, Bad Guys, Bards, Magic Horses.

I'm sure about two things

1. Elidor is still one of the best books written
2. It probably had a profound effect on my subsequent reading matter. Aure entuluva !
