Come on out, Danlo. A seven hour drive is like going to the grocery store for you Westerners.

Earthy - always great to see you! I have never been to Tucson any of the times I have gone out to Arizona - please tell us all about it!

It must be catching - I have a five day weekend next week from Oct. 13- Oct. 17. I will not tempt you, though Danlo. Unless you will be heading to Indiana for whatever bizarre reason! At least the initial plan is to go visit my son (that is all I want for my birthday this year ). If the Tigers are still playing baseball by some act of God, I might stick at home to go see a game and party in downtown Detroit, though. Luckily, given the Tigers, that probably will not happen! ******************************************************

Ah, the ever changing variables of life.

Earthy, you started the spread of October vacation contagion! (Or at least tiem off of work or school. )

I talked to my older son today, and he will be going on his architecture college field trip to Chicago next weekend for five days! But he will be coming home Holloween weekend for "fall break".

Since Calibaby will not let me head out to the east coast (Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia) to visit famous Civil War sites only accompanied by my younger son (and while it did not come up, Danlo - I am sure he will not let me head out to Albuquerque as the only driver, either ) looks like I might try to get to a Tigers game after all.

With a kid in college there is no way I can afford to buy scalped tickets...therefore I might try to go to Detroit early and get one of the prime spots in the parking garage that overlooks the outfield. People stand there in the parking structure and watch the game all the time. I wonder how many hours early I would have to get there to be able to watch a play off game?

And by the way - Yankees suck!

Earthy picked a great time to be in Arizona rather than Buffalo! They just got their first two foot snowstorm of the season in Buffalo!

Here we had snow off and on yesterday, but it all melted as it landed.

Today, with a bit over three hours to go to the AL Pennant game, it is quite windy and cloudy and cold here. I sure hope they can get the baseball game in!

edited: a few hours later, and they did get in the baseball game, despite the cold and wind. Kenny Rogers rules, baby!!!
Tigers win!!

update from the land of ice & snow....

The city of Buffalo & northern suburbs got hammered bad with snow & have serious tree damage with about 250,000 without power. We were in Tuscon over the weekend - I think we probably went over our cell phone minutes on Friday calling & checking on the home front. We were without power until Saturday & without power, the sump pump doesn't work, so our basement flooded - we didn't have a lot of damage, but carpets & some furniture were lost. Many people will not get power back until later this week, which will be a big problem due to cold temps & rain.

My wife heard that they estimate up to 60% of trees in Buffalo & north suburbs were either damaged or destroyed - it really is pretty bad there

We are ok where we are in Hamburg, just need to clean up....

BTW, Tuscon was a blast - even got to go see Tombstone!!!

Cripple but free; I was blind all the time I was learning to see

Hey, Earthy - I had heard that was a bad storm - I'm glad that your home came through it with minimal damage!

Tucson sounds great! Maybe next time I get out to Arizona, I'll make it down there rather than my usual Scottsdale.

It's 90°F where I am today, and summer hasn't started yet...still spring technically.

Cold and raining hard all day here today. To celebrate the last day of my long weekend (not to mention turning the grand age of 42) I went to the Henry Ford Museum today. We got to see all sorts of cool things - and macabre things, too! We saw the folding cot Washington slept on when encampled in the American Revolution, what seemed like hundreds of historic cars, the limo Kennedy was riding in when he was assassinated, the chair Lincoln was sitting in when he was assassinated (and yes - there are stains - is that gross or what???), and we got to sit on the Rosa Parks protest bus. Now that last thing was kewl beyond words! Lots of other really cool historic stuff, too. It was a great way to spend the afternoon. ******************************************************

They had the actual limo that JFK got shot in? That's eerie and freaky.

It's cold, wet and windy here, too. I think this is the most miserable type of weather. I want this transitional period between fall and winter to be over with. Give me the white stuff!

btw, don't mention the white stuff, I'm not ready for it yet!!

Yes, it was the actual Kennedy assassination car. Luckily, they completely ripped it apart and rebuilt it after he was shot to use it for the next few presidents. So you did not see stains like you did with the Lincoln chair.

For about a week now it has been (for the most part) windy and either raining or snowing (though we did have a couple of breathtakingly beautiful fall days, too). We are also on the cusp between autumn and winter. ******************************************************

Nice day yesterday, suddenly pretty cloudy today. So glad winter is over. Was heartily sick of it.

Am really sore today...did some hard climbing yesterday and I can feel it in my legs, arms and shoulders. That'll teach me.

I just realized that I have a lot to look forward to in the next few days.

On Friday next my older son will be coming home for "fall break" from school. It will be great to see him! And he will be here for five days!

And next Saturday evening I will get to see the Royal Shakespeare Company present Antony and Cleopatra. I have not seen that play on stage before, and I am eager to see it...not to mention that there is this guy named Patrick Stewart who will be playing Antony.

Sometimes it is very beneficial to live near a major university. And the occasional perks like this one (the Royal Shakespeare Company in residence) even make up for the football traffic when 100,000 sports fans converge on a small city that has terrible parking problems on normal days.

And the long awaited Gene Wolfe book, Soldier of Sidon will finally be coming out on Halloween, which isn't that far away, either.

I love Halloween - the little kids get so excited, and look so cute in their costumes! ******************************************************

I love Halloween, too. It holds more meaning for me than Christmas.

Yeah, it would be cool to see Patrick Stewart doing Shakespeare on stage. I envy you!
