Beat! Beat! Drums!
Poem lyrics of Beat! Beat! Drums! by Walt Whitman.

Beat! beat! drums!--Blow! bugles! blow!
Through the windows--through doors--burst like a ruthless force,
Into the solemn church, and scatter the congregation;
Into the school where the scholar is studying;
Leave not the bridegroom quiet--no happiness must he have now with
his bride;
Nor the peaceful farmer any peace, plowing his field or gathering his
grain;
So fierce you whirr and pound, you drums--so shrill you bugles blow.

Beat! beat! drums!--Blow! bugles! blow!
Over the traffic of cities--over the rumble of wheels in the streets:
Are beds prepared for sleepers at night in the houses? No sleepers
must sleep in those beds;
No bargainers' bargains by day--no brokers or speculators--Would they
continue?
Would the talkers be talking? would the singer attempt to sing?
Would the lawyer rise in the court to state his case before the
judge?
Then rattle quicker, heavier drums--you bugles wilder blow.

Beat! beat! drums!--Blow! bugles! blow!
Make no parley--stop for no expostulation;
Mind not the timid--mind not the weeper or prayer;
Mind not the old man beseeching the young man;
Let not the child's voice be heard, nor the mother's entreaties;
Make even the trestles to shake the dead, where they lie awaiting the
hearses,
So strong you thump, O terrible drums--so loud you bugles blow.

Thanks Duchess.

Not very lyrical, is he? I think a lot of his stuff reads more like a style of prose than poetry.

And like much poetry, it's meant for reading aloud.

Must have been a good reader. Bet he/she put a lot of force into the "Beat! Beat!" That's how Whitman should be read I think. Forcefully, emphatically.

The man who read it was a well known local lawyer. I do not know if he has ever had any professional vocal training, such as a singer would have, but he did a superb job. ******************************************************

Today we finally got some nice weather. We were finally able to do our long anticipated diet coke & mentos science experiment. We were screaming with laughter! Science can be lots of fun!

A video of some other peoples' mentos madness:

Well, tomorrow will begin our four day holiday weekend. We will be heading down to Indiana, where will be camping in a state park on a lake a few miles from the town where Bigred is going to school. I might or might not have time to pop back on line for a few minutes before we go. (I haven't even started packing yet).

Hope everyone has a great weekend!!

It was a gorgeous day here, felt like an early autumn day - though they say the remnants of hurricane Ernesto might work its way to this part of the country and dump tons of rain on us this weekend. If that happens, I am going to pack up the camp and get a hotel room in Muncie for the weekend.

Thought I would stop off on my way to bed. Happy holiday weekend, ya'll!!!!

Dang I'm sooooooooooo tired I can't even post. The Benadryl and wine are kicking in-and been up since 5am. I'm trying to stay up till 1pm to rectify a mistake I made in "The Watchers" Fantasy football league but I don't think I can make it. Talk at you tomorrow--- *****

Just take it easy for a while danlo. Rest is the best cure.

I'm sore as hell today. Went rock-climbing yesterday after work. Only two sessions on the wall before, and suddenly a 15m climb up a cliff face. And I haven't done any excercise in 10 years. : Oh well, I survived. And it was fun.

Goog goin' Av! I'm trying to take it easy tonight but a football game, even college, would calm my nerves right now-taking care of little Elora Grace girly and listening to Opium by Ottmar Liebert. I'm planning to work in the yard tomorrow even if it means sweating out my sinus problems and streching my knee back into order. Actually feeling better on both counts--the knee is almost back to normal and the sinus stuff is probably halfway due to all the damm crap the huge weeds around town are kicking out.

Yes, many folks here in Albq. have run up the white flag on weeds as this has been the rainiest Summer and coldest August on record. Going to take the brand new Rail Runner train, for free, to the Bernalillo Wine Festival on Sunday and kickback and grill in the backyard on Monday-which will look much better after the lawn is mowed and a bunch of mutant weeds for hell are yanked. *****
