I've been stopping by here and the Watch every day, but haven't been finding much time to post (or read, or watch movies...). Work has been pretty crazy the last week or so.

Hope everyone is doing very well! ******************************************************

Well, one of the worst two of my son's college applications (University of Michigan) with its three essays will hopefully be done this weekend.

That will leave the College of Architecture application for Ball State, which will have one essay and a portfolio. (You have to be admitted to BSU first, then there is a separate application process for the arch school).

Last Saturday and this Saturday both of the kids will have a wrestling tournament. Next Saturday it will be just one of them, as will the following Saturday.

However, we have tickets to three concerts (one of them for a friend's choir) in the next two weekends. It will be interesting seeing if we can fit them in along with the wrestling tournaments!

And the little son has a band concert in there someplace, too.

I am hoping to try to get the Christmas tree up on Sunday this weekend (or at least have someone haul the decorations crates up from the basement). Any other decorations (like outdoor lighting) can just be skipped this year with everything being so busy.

But a lot of my holiday shopping is done!

If only my job could calm down...

So....maybe by the holidays things might start calming down a bit? I do get long weekends for both Christmas and New Years...

Yeah, I saw that on the weather channel this morning. You guys are getting Michigan winter temps out there in New Mexico!

It's been pretty cold around here, too. Its been hovering around zero after dark. We'll be getting a snow storm tonight, and its supposed to get up closer to freezing for the weekend.

There was a great announcement in the Ann Arbor News last night -- the Royal Shakespeare Company will be coming to Ann Arbor and putting on three plays. Patrick Stewart will have the lead in two of them. I will have to see if I can get tickets this time around. ******************************************************

My son got accepted to Columbia University early decision. We are so proud of him.

Now we just need to figure out where the money to pay for it will come from.

That's great! Congratulations to your son!

We're still waiting to hear from all of the schools my son applied to. He didn't take his ACT until October, so we think that the schools are still waiting to get his test score. Here in the Midwest, most schools go by the ACT rather than the SAT test family.

Yeah, I hear you about the money, MsMary! Bill was seriously thinking about adding Northwestern and Cornell to his application list, but decided against it due to cost concerns. So he's sticking with his three MAC schools and one Big Ten school. Even then we think he'll probably have a loan debt that makes us a bit sick to our stomachs just thinking about it.

But Columbia. That's spectactularly great! And the opportunity to live and learn in New York City is pretty fine, too. ******************************************************

Yes, my son is very excited about it. One of the reasons he chose Columbia was because he liked the atmosphere of being in NYC, with all it has to offer.

Both my kids will be at expensive schools, but we decided a long time ago that we wanted to give them every opportunity to benefit from the kind of education that is available at the elite colleges, if they could make the grade. We will do whatever we need to do to make it happen. "Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?"<i></i>

My son is very shy and uncomfortable around new places/people/situations. One of his biggest criteria in choosing the colleges on his list was that they were either close to home, or easy to travel to home from them.

Two of the schools he applied to, the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University are within ten miles of home. Western Michigan University is only a couple of hours away by either car or Amtrack. Ball State University is about 3 hours away by car, and has one of the top ten architecture schools in the country.

He briefly considered Illinois, as well as Northwestern and Cornell. Illinois and Cornell were deemed to be too far away, as were Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Case Western, Kent State, Michigan Tech and Perdue. Anything on the coasts was out of the question for him. Northwestern was still seriously considered because he said it would be easy and cheap to catch a commuter train to downtown Chicago and then catch an Amtrack to home whenever he wanted to come home for a couple of days.

When he first started high school and wanted to go to football games he would ask me to drive him to the games. The first few times he sat next to me, glued at the hip. His friends would ask him to come sit with them, but he stayed with me. Then one game he went immediately and sat with his friends, and he was fine from there on out.

I expect college will be the same way if he goes away. He will come home for a lot of weekends initially, then he will stop coming home very often, and that will be the sign that he is comfortable and happy with his new situation. <i></i>

Congratulations on your son being admitted to Columbia!

Our son decided yesterday to apply to Northwestern after all. If he goes there, my wife would not doubt be delighted to be able to visit Chicago frequently. Have you hugged your cat today?<i></i>

I certainly wouldn't mind catching the train over to Chicago every couple of months.

MsMary and I would both be able to visit our boys in wonderful cities, and treat them out to good food and some of the world's best museums and theater.

Meh. We're due for another snowstorm tonight. Depending on which forecast you watch, we'll be getting anything from 3-8 inches. That's quite a variation on the part of the forecasters. ******************************************************
