Don't be confused or alarmed by the new forum below this one--it's part of my Grad School class project so if you see 15 new members floating around don't be suprised--feel free to check it out, once we get going--it's not exclusive by any means but give us a week or two to start or you'll be just as confused as we are! Thanks *****

Yes, congratulations!

Has anyone heard from MsMary here or at the Watch since the hurricaine hit?

Its a lovely day here. I have actually opened up the windows so the kitties can get some fresh air this afternoon. The sun is out and the breeze is bringing down showers of lovely yellow and orange autumn leaves.

This is the most beautiful fall I can ever rememebr seeing. ******************************************************

Hi, I am back.

We are fine, and our house was undamaged by Hurricane Wilma. We had a lot of big tree branches down all around the house, which is a big clean-up headache. We got most of the big branches cut up and hauled to the curb as well as some of the smaller twigs and leaf debris. When things calm down, we will have to get a tree man in here to prune broken and tall branches so they won't be a problem in future storms. I imagine it will be a very expensive proposition.

We were actually very lucky, as there was a lot of tree and roof damage all around the neighborhood. A brand-new roof blew off a house a block over. The avocado tree of a neighbor on the street behind us blew into my next door neighbor's pool and partially destroyed her screened pool enclosure. Her pool looks like a swamp, and she is anticipating that it will cost her thousands to fix the pool enclosure.

Our power and phone lines were knocked out by the storm, at around 5 or 6am the day Wilma hit, on Monday, Oct. 24. We got back partial power at midnight the Tuesday night following the storm, much quicker than we expected - some lights were dim, and the AC, dishwasher, washing machine, stove did not work, but the fridge, fortunately, did. The AC made a terrible noise when the power came on, and my husband got up to turn it off. Fortunately, the weather was pleasantly cool for about a week following the hurricane. An electrician informed us that the problem was a power line connection that had been blown loose by the storm.

My husband tested the outlets to see which had full power and ran an extension cord from Foamy's room to my son's computer so he could work on his college application.

On Friday afternoon 3 days later, as I was attempting to cook pasta in the microwave, the utility guys came and turned off the power again, cause a live wire had been discovered in the palm tree across the street. I hadn't prepared for a power outage by turning my refrigerator to the coldest temperature this time, so I was concerned that all the food I had managed to salvage would spoil. I went around the corner to my friend and she kept me supplied with gallon jugs of frozen water to keep the fridge cool. It works great, but we still had to discard some food.

A man came and cut the wire on Sunday night a week ago, and gave us back our partial power. Monday night a week ago, two guys came and fixed the line and restored our electricity. I celebrated Tuesday by doing about half a dozen loads of laundry, running the dishwasher, and doing some cleaning. I never thought I would be happy to do housework.

Our phone was fixed last Wednesday evening, but still seems to be having issues. Since we still have a dial-up connection, I couldn't get online till the phone was fixed. Since my power was restored, I have been busy doing offline tasks that couldn't get done without electricity, and catching up with my email.

I have been trying to reach my doctor to get a note for work saying I am cleared to go back to work, but his office phones have not yet been restored. The answering service finally reached his office and called me back saying the note would be mailed today.

On the personal front, my foot really isn't back to normal, still swollen, and the toe that broke still feels very odd, but I am able to walk enough to work, and I was even able to do a bit of Israeli folkdancing this Sunday night. So I am hoping for the best. I will ease back into work gradually, I guess.

That's all for now. "Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?"<i></i>

MsMary -- I am soooooo happy to hear that you and your family are safe and well! Sounds like you had quite a lot of clean up work, though - both outside and inside the house. Is your son able to go to school, or has that also been affected by the power problems?

Happy Birthday Lady Tam!!!!!!! ******************************************************

I'm on day two of a five day weekend from work, so am happy. Yesterday was Mr. Sunshine's birthday, and Monday is Bigredbulldog's birthday. Bigred will be getting books by Donaldson and Martin for his birthday.

The latest rumors about possible deployment say that there is little to no chance that the rest of us who signed up for disaster relief will be sent. The immediate emergency needs after the hurricanes are better (though long term cleanup will take years in some cases) and there are thousands of people on the volunteer list for our federal agency alone.

So, I think I will restart the Dune read this weekend, hopefully before I get my hands on A Feast For Crows tonight, because once I start that, no one will see me until I am done with it. I will start an extreme spoiler thread in the Martin forum, once I get going with it.

Its been a very mild fall. In one way that's wonderful, as it has been the most beautiful autumn I can ever remember seeing. In another way, its bad because everyone I know who has allergies and asthma (family, friends, family of friends) has been pretty sick lately. My younger son had asthma problems earlier this week, and I had a mild attack last night when I got to laughing too hard. Death by laughter wouldn't be such a bad way to go, though. We need a good freeze to kill the mold on the downed leaves, and then everyone will feel better. ******************************************************

Hope you had a great extended weekend, Duchess, and happy birthdays to all the birthday people.

I went to my job today to get my clearance to go back to work and to attend a mandatory IV class for nurses. The education department told me that today was the last day the class would be offered. Turns out, though, that I had already taken the class! (I thought I had, but the education dept secretary told me that if I didn't have a certificate, I hadn't taken the class.) I was the only one who showed up for the class, so the instructor gave me a quick review of the info. At least I got paid for the hour.

One of my department supervisors gave me a schedule to request the days I want to work. I was told I need to work one holiday, so it's New Year's Eve, for me. I haven't decided the rest of my days, yet, though.

Then, I went to track down two missing pay stubs that were never mailed to me while I was out on leave. First I looked where we normally pick up our checks/pay stubs (in a drawer of the med cart in the med room, if you can believe it!). No pay stub. The woman who does the payroll in my department looked through all the unclaimed checks/pay stubs in her drawer. No pay stub. She sent me to Payroll. Guess what? Still no pay stub. However, a gentleman there printed out copies of the information on the two missing pay stubs and promised me he would continue looking for the missing stubs. (I told him I would let him know if someone steals my identity. )

All I can say is, it's a good thing I have direct deposit! Could you imagine if the hospital had lost two paychecks of mine, instead of just the stubs with information on what had been paid and witheld?!

I guess we can chalk it up to bureaucratic incompetence. "Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?"<i></i>

<shudders at thought of two missing paychecks>

I'm glad your foot is doing well enough for you to return to work. Everytime I step on a lego I think of how you got hurt from a common household object. ******************************************************

OK - it's November 17 and we just got our first 28" snowfall last night. Duchess can probly appreciate the term "Lake effect snow" as well as I can!!!

Took me 1 1/2 hr to clear the drive way - it is a very heavy snow - thank God for snow blowers!!

I was thinking how much of a pain it was this morning untill I remembered all the hurricane distruction this past summer & fall - I'll take my 18" of snow any day over a hurricane.

Happy belated birthday to all & have a great Thanksgiving - We are taking our 7 yr old to Disney world in Florida next week - gotta get away from cold weather!!!!

Cripple but free; I was blind all the time I was learning to see<i></i>

We've been getting snow showers the last two days, but no accumulation yet -- but it is very cold! It will not get above freezing today. At least the sun is trying to peek out from the cloud cover, which is always welcome at this very gray time of year. ******************************************************

Yes, I have to say I am a LOT more careful walking around the house these days.
