Blackout by Connie Willis.

While the premise is good (time traveling historians going back to WW2) and the plot really promising, this puppy is in desperate need of an editor...

What really pissed me off, though, is that no where on the cover is it indicated that this is only half of a bloody book. Yes - this is yet another book which has been needlessly cut in half at a random moment in the plot by the publisher, with the second half coming out in the fall. HATE HATE HATE this modern publishing trend. :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x And if I had known this was only half of a book, I would not have even considered reading it until both halves were available.

In fact, I am considering boycotting all future books (with the exception of Wheel of Time, since I have already committed huge chunks of time and ten thousand or so pages to reading it) where this is done by the publisher.

Good to know that Blackout is just the first half of a two-book series (duology?). I'd seen that it had come out and then totally forgotten about it. Now I guess I'll wait 'til part 2 comes out and read them both at once. 8)

Ah, good to know. Yeah, it annoys me when that happens. It's why I put off reading the most recent ASoIaF for so long -- I was waiting for Martin to finish it....

About to start 'The Postman' by David Brin. I read online some dude's top 50 sci-fi books ever, and this made the list. I'm gonna be pissed if he was wrong about it.

Always, buried in the tissues of his heart and belly, there had burned a deep desire to consume the meat of another animal and to taste the marvelous tang of blood once more. War in Heaven, p. 387.

I loved it from start to finish. Some people only like the first 2/3rds and think the last 1/3rd should not have been put in.

It's pretty awesome; I'm maybe a 3d of the way in.

Re-reading Dune. I first read it in my 20s -- wasn't thrilled with it then. I'm liking it better this time around. :)

Beorn is reading Dune for the first time. He finished Childen of a couple of days ago, and will check G-d Emperor out of the library next time he heads over. I never made it through the first one.
...much like Gardens of the Moon.
