Duchess, I get what you're saying about the big fantasy releases, and I too hope sales for the others won't eat into SRD's. For me, I haven't ready any of WoT so that's not a factor -- and at this point, I'm not holding my breath for Martin to *ever* finish his next book.

IIRC, didn't "Fatal Revenant" come out the same year as the last Harry Potter book? Not *exactly* the same audience, but still....

You know, other than Martin, most of my favorite fantasy writers are midlist at best - such as Donaldson and Bakker and McKillip and McKinley and Briggs. Of the huge Bestselling Authors I like some of Stephen King (he's a mixed bag for me) and ditto for Robert Jordan, like Rowling, and despise the work of Terry Goodkind, Laurell K. Hamilton (her books started out OK, but devolved into endless plotless orgies) and the Eragon kid. And I did not like the bit of the work of the Twilight lady that I tried to read. Is her name Stephenie Meyer or something like that?

If people who do not regularly read the genre end up reading things like Goodkind, with its twenty page speaches about Objectivism, and the very derivative Eragon, I can see why they snear. And if you do not live near a good bookstore, that's the sort of thing you will run into rather than Erikson or Bakker or Donaldson and some of the better writers.

...but then, I am biased, based on the stories I have heard of Mephiston from Xar in the Twin Worlds campaign setting...

Argothoth was how he first joined the Watch, so Argothoth he'll be forever more to me.

Too late! I decided to check out Snow Crash, and about 2 pages in I was hooked like a fish. It won't take me long to finish this sucker, though.
