That is a cool story - good to know that he has really gotten his life together. :) 8)

Another gold medal for the Jamaican sprinter Bolt, along with another world record in relay. Holy crap, that guy runs like Secretariat.

The US women lost the gold medal game to Japan - something which I think is actually very healthy and hopeful for the overall sport as a whole. One of the reasons they are eliminating the sport from the Olympics is that it is too US dominated. That is no longer the case...

Watched the men's US baseball team get blown out by a good Cuba team. I think I might be willing to give up an ovary to have the Cuba closer on the Detroit Tigers. As lights out as Bobby Jenks from the White Sox, but able to stretch it out for multiple innings. :faint:

And they just said that Bolt is donating $50,000 to the Red Cross for the relief of the huge earthquake they had in China. That IOC head honcho dude who was criticising the kid (and he is young!) for showboating after he won his first gold can now shut the heck up until he matches that act!

That gold medal win for Japan was in softball, right? Had no idea it's being eliminated from the Olympics. Then again, it's not a sport I follow.

Well, I'm happy for the Jamaican men's relay team - glad they managed to keep their baton passing clean. I was shocked at the number of teams that got disqualified due to botched exchanges, on both the women's and men's side. Had been looking forward to a battle between the American and Jamaican teams, but it was not to be...

The criticism over Usain Bolt's "showboating" is much ado over very little, imo. I didn't see him denigrating his fellow athletes or other countries. He just seems a naturally buoyant, light-hearted guy who's enjoying himself at the Olympics.

Yes, that was softball (sorry I was not clear on that in my post). Both softball and baseball are being eliminated for the London Olympics. They say that softball because no other country has a chance against the US (which has been proven to not be the case!!) and I think baseball because the best players from most countries are not allowed to play by the MLB (we're talking US, Canada, Latin American and Carribean countries, and even some of Japan's biggest stars).

Yeah, all of those dropped batons were just

I think the Jamaican women's team would have won the gold AND set a new world record in their final, had they not messed up the baton exchange (and they took out the British women, too). :(

I'm using my son's laptop and currently watching what might be the last Olympic baseball game EVER. It is in the bottom of the ninth between Korea and Cuba, and Korea is winning by one run. Great game!

They say the US won the bronze last night, which is pretty amazing - the two games I saw them play they looked mighty bad.

The end of that baseball game was wild. Bottom of the ninth. One Cuban out, three on base, the Korean catcher decided to argue balls and strikes and gets ejected from the game. Korea puts in a new catcher and a relief pitcher and the new pitcher got the first batter he faced to hit into a double play. Korea wins the Olympic gold!!!

Argentina won the men's soccer gold 1-0 over Nigeria. Brazil won the bronze, despite losing players to red cards in the seni-finals.

One of the highlights of any summer games will be on tonight - the men's marathon.

For me the highlight - because it was so unexpected - was seeing Matthew Mitcham of Australia win gold in Men's 10M platform diving, and thus preventing China from sweeping the diving events. Mitcham nailed the win with his final dive, too, scoring four perfect 10's. It was awesome. Apparently Mitcham is the first Australian man to win gold in diving since the 1924 Olympics.

Caught the tail end of the rhythmic gymnastics competition earlier in the day - it didn't appear to get much coverage on the American or Canadian networks. I wasn't particularly surprised. Definitely not as high profile as artistic gymnastics.

The men's marathon almost mirrored the women's with someone pulling way ahead for the win. I was surprised that this was Kenya's first gold in the men's marathon; I guess I tend to get Kenya and Ethiopia mixed up.

Congrats to the US Men's and Women's 4x400 relay wins; when they manage not to drop the baton, they're awesome to behold. :P

So, that finishes it for my Olympic viewing. There remains gold to be decided in the men's volleyball, basketball and water polo matches, but personally I have little interest in them.

I might check in on the closing ceremonies just to see what further visual shenanigans the Chinese organizers are up to, heh. More fake fireworks, maybe? I hear that Jimmy Page will be one of the performers, so that could be a treat for Led Zep fans. At least with Page, there shouldn't be any lip-synching controversy.

Usually the closing ceremonies feature at least some artists and officials from the next host country; Jimmy Page sounds liek a great choice to me. Also Michael Phelps will supposedly be doing something for the cameras in London as a paer of the ceremony? :?

I also got to see that diving final last night. The Aussie was close and then he put in a truly spectactular last dive to capture the gold! 8)

Kenya and Ethiopia put on a show in the marathon and then the 5k race. They said that the young guy from Kenya who won the marathon was determined to win it to try to bring some joy and togetherness for his country, which has faced so much internal strife over the past year. You have to respect that! :)

Last night was it for my Olympics as well. I will be at work tonight during the closing ceremony.

Won't the next winter Olympics be in two years somewhere in BC? :? Having it only a three hour time difference rather than on the other side of the international date line will be a relief, if that's the case.
