I think Simmons is a superb writer, one whose books you can go back to again and again (which is a huge critical landmark for me); both the Ilium and Hyperion series are an almost annual treat for me, though now I've added Zindell to the list the squeeze is on!

I need to read the Ilium books, I already miss his eloquence in the Hyperion books.

One of the main things which keeps me going back to the Ilium books is the dry humour. I think too much sf takes itself way too seriously, and while the Ilium books are staggeringly complex and well-developed, there is a vein of really clever humour running right throughout.
