I have been listening to a lot of the SF (San Francisco) Jazz Collective. They are sort of like a power jazz group based out on the west coast with a lot of very good performers playing together in a large ensemble. I have heard them called the west coast's answer to the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. They do some tribute music to jazz greats, and also play a lot of their own stuff.

They'll be here in concert in a couple of weeks... ******************************************************

Tonight I listened to a CD by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra called Don't Be Afraid. It is a tribute to Charle Mingus, and all of hte music is by that artist.

The music is very challenging, and brilliantly played.

Danlo might like knowing that one of the songs is called Don't Be Afraid, the Clown's Afraid Too.

As always, I have been listening to a lot of U2 as well. ******************************************************

We went shopping at a used CD store in Ann Arbor lasty night and I found something that looks both unique and fun. It is a symphony written by a composer named Michael Daugherty called the Metropolis Symphony. It is all in tribute to Superman comic books!

The names of the movements:
Lex
Krypton
Mxyzptik
Oh, Lois!
Red Cape Tango

There is also a related piece on the CD called Bizarro.

I think I will spend part of my afternoon listening to this.

I will also listen to Holst's The Planets.

I am listening to SF Jazz Collective 2, the second CD from the west coast super group the San Francisco Jazz Collective. Each of the members of the ensemble has to be both a master of his or her intrument, and a jazz composer as well. Each year the group picks a jazz master to play tribute to, as well as playing their own compositions.

On this CD, they play music from the great Johnny Coltrane, as well as their own originals. ******************************************************

I have been listening to Mahler's Third Symphony today. It's good to have my little stereo system fixed again so I can lsiten to music in the peace and quiet of my bedroom. ******************************************************

Time Heals-Todd Rundgren

If you're bleeding,
Then everyone can see you're bleeding
They can call for the doctor,
Who'll provide what the diagnosis says you're needing
Then he'll take away your pain
But if your heart,
Your heart has been broken
And you don't wear it on your sleeve
No one can tell,
Your hell goes unspoken
But there's one thing you must believe

Time heals the wounds no one can see
Time heals the wounds that no one can see

If you're crying
Then everyone can see you crying

And they all sympathize
But it just doesn't matter
Though they may be trying,
They can't feel the hurt inside
You can't go on,
You've gone to the limit
And your life seems to slip away
You're on your own
Alone you must face it
And tomorrow's so far away

You got to hold on baby
Got to give it time to heal
Time heals the wounds that no one can see
You must believe what they say is true
It do's wonders for ya, yeah, yeah
*****

KT Tunstall's Black Horse and the Cherry Tree

two, three, four

(woo-hoo,woo-hoo)
(woo-hoo,woo-hoo)

well my heart knows me better than i know myself
so i'm gonna let it do all the talking.
(woo-hoo,woo-hoo)
i came across a place in the middle of nowhere
with a big black horse and a cherry tree.
(woo-hoo,woo-hoo)

i fell in fear, upon my back
i said don't look back, just keep on walking.
(woo-hoo,woo-hoo)
when the big black horse that looked this way,
said hey lady, will you marry me?
(woo-hoo,woo-hoo)

but i said no, no, no,no-no-no
i said no, no, you're not the one for me
no, no, no,no-no-no
i said no, no, you're not the one for me

(ooooo,woo-hoo)

and my heart had a problem, in the early hours,
so it stopped it dead for a beat or two.
(woo-hoo,woo-hoo)
but i cut some cord, and i shouldn't have done that,
and it won't forgive me after all these years
(woo-hoo,woo-hoo)

so i sent her to a place in the middle of nowhere
with a big black horse and a cherry tree.
(woo-hoo,woo-hoo)
now it won't come back , cause it's oh so happy
and now i've got a hole for the world to see
(woo-hoo,woo-hoo)

but it said no, no, no,no-no-no
i said no, no, you're not the one for me
no, no, no,no-no-no
said no, no, you're not the one for me

(ooooo,woo-hoo) (not the one for me, yeah)
(ooooo,woo-hoo)
said no,no, no,no, no, no, no
you're not the one for me
said no,no, no,no, no, no, no
you're not the one for me

big black horse and a cherry tree
i can't quite get there cause they've all forsaken me
big black horse and a cherry tree
