This has been bugging me for a couple of days now. I would like to remember title of novel or possibly novella. Plot is based around alien planet that has a surface that is maybe 100% water. The settlers on this planet are humans and all manner of cetaceans, seems in this Earth of the future the whales (all species) were virtually doomed to extinction, and then a scientist discovered how to directly communicate with them. After that the remnant populations were whisked off Earth and sent to populate this foreign world. On this planet the whales and humans coexist, and sometimes interact cause all the whales can communicate with each other and all the humans. And in the scenario of the planet, the orcas are the closest to the humans. And in the story I am thinking of a human on this planet needs help from the whales to help solve a crime.
From what I know, and that is a very small amount, this might have been an prologue to the Uplift series. But I think I read this when I finishing up college, and that was like 25 yrs. ago. I know this question sounds really goofy. taraswizard
