By far the coolest dragons anywhere, Menolly.  
I will see about getting up chapter two this weekend. I know Menolly and Av have their hands on copies of the book - how about Danlo? And where has Furls gone off to? Not to mention Taras?

There's talk of dragons in WoE, and an awesome scene with one. But sorry to say you'll have to wait a while before you meet your Ranyhyn.

Oh, you do not really learn about the dragons until after the third book.
Incidentally, there are some extremely disturbing (to me anyway) [spoiler] scenes of child abuse in the fourth book, Tehanu. I'm not sure if you want to have your son hold off on that one until you or you hub have a chance to check it out first or not.

No dragons in ToA, but Ged mentions one, and even a mention is great!
One dragon in particular, arguably the coolest of all, plays a pretty big role in TFS. Another dragon with a much smaller role fills one with awe nonetheless. Important hints and a couple of short appearances in Tehanu. But the dragons really come to the forefront in the Dragonfly/The Other Wind combination. And throughout, there's incredible human characters! A couple of my favorite characters of all literature are Ged and Azver.
