For me at least it's hard to chose just one favorite character, since there are so many, so I'm gonna choose five!

1. Ned Stark
2. Jon Snow
3. Old Bear Mormont
4. Maester Aemon
5. Robert Baratheon Further up, and further in!

Tyrion
Jon Snow
Qhorin Halfhand
Jagen
Bronn/Ghost And now Danlo looked in that direction, too. He remembered that snowy owls mate in the darkest part of deep winter, and so along with this beautiful white bird perched in a tree a hundred feet away, he turned to face the sea as he watched and waited.

Ahira, Ahira, he called out silently to the sky. Ahira, Ahira

Frey and Bolton really were serious creeps, weren't they? And now Danlo looked in that direction, too. He remembered that snowy owls mate in the darkest part of deep winter, and so along with this beautiful white bird perched in a tree a hundred feet away, he turned to face the sea as he watched and waited.

Yeah Bolton's really strange. But he's Warden of the North now (although it's in name only, like how Jaime is the "Warden of the East") and allied with the Lannisters which makes him even worse! Though I wouldn't put it past him (or Frey) to double-cross the Lannisters as soon as it becomes not-so benefecial, as in Tommen losing the war. Further up, and further in!

One of the things I love about Martin's writing is how vivid some of his more minor characters are. And some of my favorites among them are The Red Viper, Quorin Halfhand, the Old Bear, Benjen, and Gendry. And the Queen of Thorns is really cool!

And what about his really gray characters like Jaime and the Hound, who do some awful things but also seem to be good on at least some levels? Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell

I agree, Duchess. I have a real love/hate relationship with some of Martin's characters. The Hound's bark is certainly worse than his bite, as far as the Stark girls go and Jaimie is almost human by the end of the third book!

Interesting how no one's mentioned Varys or Lord Baelish, yet... And now Danlo looked in that direction, too. He remembered that snowy owls mate in the darkest part of deep winter, and so along with this beautiful white bird perched in a tree a hundred feet away, he turned to face the sea as he watched and waited.

They're both okay, Varys more so than Littlefinger. I like his nickname, btw. Where'd he get it? Further up, and further in!

Varys and Littlefinger are pretty weird man! I think LF came from the "sheep tower" on the smallest of the Fingers. And now Danlo looked in that direction, too. He remembered that snowy owls mate in the darkest part of deep winter, and so along with this beautiful white bird perched in a tree a hundred feet away, he turned to face the sea as he watched and waited.

Tyrion, definately has to be one of the best chars. Jon Snow goes on this list too. I like Davos Seaworth, personally.
It's really hard to just pick a few good ones... There are so many.
I have high hopes for the Jaime we saw at the end of aSoS. Jaime the Kingslayer was arrogant and proud, and didn't take anything seriously. Ser Jaime of Lannister, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, however - I can see him being as respected as Barristan was at the beginning of the series. He is turning into a much better (and more interesting) character now.
Just a q - did he ever shave his beard off? I can't remember... ------------------

'You take that back!'
