What is it like to be, like Sansa, alone among your enemies, cut off from all those she loves? Stuck with a sadistic creep and his mother who ridicule her at every turn, yet wont let her go because of her value as a hostage. Sure the fool Dontos is looking into her escape, but how far can he go to help her? The closest one to a "friend" there being the Hound! Well the Hound had fled from the fire of battle toward the end of ACOK. Such is poor Sansa's life.

The chapter opens with a invitation to supper from the woman who is to take her place as Joffery's bride. Margaery Tyrell, who was wed to and is now the widow of Renly Baratheon. Sansa is puzzled as to why Margaery would take the time to meet with her. But she has no one to confide in so she accepts, gracefully, as always.

Her heart flutters to find who is to escort her to the dinner - Margaery's brother Ser Loras. This turns out to be a false dawn though, as her conversation reveals that he has no rememberance of the tournament where he threw Sansa a red rose after unhorsing Ser Robar Royce. Sansa's trying to jog Loras' memory only upsets Loras, since Loras killed Ser Robar Royce at Storm's End.

They arrive at the dinner to meet Margaery, assorted cousins, her mother, and the matriarch of the family Olenna, mother of Mace Tyrell, nicknamed the Queen of Thorns.

Sansa becomes suspicious as they ask questions about Joffery. Are they trying to trap her? However their actions are so disarming, and having their fool sing a LOUD song, the Tyrells are able to get Sansa to give her real opinion about Joffery. Sansa is briefly afraid she's overdone it and that she has scared them off Joffery. That's not the case at all. They have a proposal for Sansa. They will marry her to Margaery's brother. Not Loras, to Sansa's disappointment, who is of the Kingsguard anyway, but Willas, the heir to Highgarden. Willas is older, but lame from a jousting accident. Sansa readily agrees. Her wedding to Willas will take place after Margaery's to Joffery. It offers her the prospect of finally escaping Joffery.

I have to admit to a certain fondness for the Queen of Thorns.
An expert player at the Game of Thrones, she's one woman who's not gonna let anyone harm her family members.

One reason I like the QOT: she tells it like it is.Quote:i've never been quite sure what the point of a eunuch is, if truth be told. It seems to me they're only men with the useful bits cut off. and Quote:All men are fools, if truth be told, but the ones in motley are more amusing than the ones in crowns.

This chapter also features my favoite Westeros bawdy song, about the bear and fair maid with all of that honey in her hair. Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David ZindellEdited by: Duchess of Malfi at: 3/24/03 9:21:58 am

Thank's Damelon 4 heeding my request. I re-upped the announcements in ASOIAF and on KW.

2 put it simply this is the chapter where Jon has 2 adapt, and xtremely quickly, 2 the role of traitor after the shock of just having 2 kill Qhorin Halfhand (1 of the coolest fantasy characters I've ever come across, imho). Jon also is forced 2 run an intense gautlet of many free folk who want him dead, in-cluding the Lord of Bones: Rattleshirt and some other unsavory sorts.

He takes in the scope and magnitude of the force Mance Rayder has assembled.

He finally goes 2 meet Mance Rayder with Ygritte, the redhead he spared and of whom has taken a fancy 2 him, saving his ass all the way.

Quote:This boy? The earless man was angered by the news, ""The Halfhand should have been mine. Do you have a name crow?"
"Jon Snow" Your Grace." He wondered if he was supposed to bend the kneen as well.
"Your Grace? The earless man looked at the big white breaded one. "You see he takes me for a king."
The bearded man laughed so hard he spayed bits of chicken everywhere. He rubbed the grease from his mouthwith a huge hand. "A blind boy, must be. Who ever heard of a king without ears? Why his crown would fall straight down to his neck! Har!" He grinned at Jon, wiping his fingers clean on his breeches. "Close you beak crow. Spin yourself around, might be you'd find the one you're looking for."

Pretty slick and tricksy is this silverhaired, luteplaying, red and black cloak. In fact he went over the Wall and was seated close 2 the back of the Hall, near Jon, when Eddard entertained Robert and at Winterfell. Gaintsbane is great! Mance takes him in under intense scurtiny....hmmm, what else can u think of?

Oh yeah Ghost caused quite a stir, per: usual! And now Danlo looked in that direction, too. He remembered that snowy owls mate in the darkest part of deep winter, and so along with this beautiful white bird perched in a tree a hundred feet away, he turned to face the sea as he watched and waited.

Ahira, Ahira, he called out silently to the sky. Ahira, AhiraEdited by: danlo60 at: 3/21/03 10:11:44 pm

This chapter introduces one of my favorite characters - Tormund Giantsbane, Husband to Bears. He certainly has a way with words.

One lil bit in the Jon chapter that will take on some more significance later on in the book:
Quote:"No," said Jon. "if you had been discovered, taken..." "Your father would have had my head off." The King gave a shrug. "Though once I had eaten at his board I was protected by guest right. The laws of hospitality are as old as the First Men and as sacred as a heart tree." He gestured at the board between them, the broken bread and chicken bones. "Here you are the guest, and safe from harm at my hands, this night at least." Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell

The last time I ever winced was when Covenant said something like "What, for a couple of corpses?" But Sansa came pretty damn near close! Especially every time she says "My brother is a traitor, my lord". Argh! "Courtesy" nothing! *smacks Septa Mordane* “Not a whit, we defy augury: there's a special
providence in the fall of a sparrow. If it be now,
'tis not to come; if it be not to come, it will be
now; if it be not now, yet it will come: the
readiness is all: since no man has aught of what he
leaves, what is't to leave betimes?”

But remember when Tyrion asked Sansa if she felt like she was a lamb among wolves. Her response was that she was a lamb among lions. She is in enemy hands, and trying to survive.

I would agree with you, Damelon. Sansa is just a dreamy little girl, trying to survive in a cruel world she has had no real preparation for. Growing up in House Stark doesn't seem to prepare a person for a world filled with hungry lions, snakes, and leeches...
And she's lost her direwolf, a gift from the gods themselves. that loss has always made me worry about Sansa and her future... Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell

At first I could not stand Sansa, the stuck up little princess wannabe. Now, I think she's doing well in what is a terrible situation, and growing stronger by the moment.

It occurs to me that if Jon, Arya and Bran are all wargs, might not Sansa have the same ability? Of course her dire wolf is gone, so might she find another outlet for that kind of talent?

And isn't there somebody out there looking for folks who might be able to train DRAGONS?????

I would guess that Sansa IS a warg, just like the others from the Stark pack. While we don't get a Robb or Rickon POV, I think it's pretty clear that those two are also strongly linked to their direwolves...

You know, it's funny. Ned always compares Arya to Lyanna. The two look alike and act alike, two tom-boy warrior maids...but on the inside I think it might be Sansa who is the most like Lyanna...the two of them are both romantic dreamers...Sansa dreaming of her noble knights, and Lyanna falling in love with the wrong man... Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell

Dutchess, you brought up Rickon, and that he has no pov. He's young yet though. I think we'll see Rickon return late in the series. His direwolf is black for a reason. I have a feeling he'll grow up to be a hand of vengance for his family, and be rather merciless going about it.

despite no pov Rickon may b demanding but he's also no-nonsense. Looking back I almost 4got the part where he split off from the group in a effort 2 get 2 White Harbor w/Osha right? Where xactly was that? And now Danlo looked in that direction, too. He remembered that snowy owls mate in the darkest part of deep winter, and so along with this beautiful white bird perched in a tree a hundred feet away, he turned to face the sea as he watched and waited.

These are the chapters I am currently reading. I haven't yet read the chapter on Jon but just finished Sansa.

Anyway, if it would not be a spoiler, would someone please tell me what a warg is. Either I missed it in the books or it has yet to be explained.

Arya dreams of wolves, Bran has his "greendreams" in which he "becomes his direwolf" when he hunts and runs w/Rickon's Direwolf he essentially is running w/Rickon. Robb's Greywind is an xtention of his personality as is Ghost 2 Jon. Contrary 2 the wargs in LOTRs here it makes it possible 4 the Stark children 2 magically merge w/their Direwolves through practice. Manticore or shapeshifter r other terms that describe a "warg", in the ASOIAF sense. But here r others who have this ability, as well. Mance's eagle that tracks Qhorin and Jon was said 2 have incorporated the spirit of the man Jon slew on the cliff. And the old Dragonlords were said 2 have this ability as well.

Jojen Reed is actively helping Bran develope his warg power and this coupled w/Bran's vision of the 3 eyed crow--suggest that Bran has the potential 2 become the best of the lot and may even learn 2 fly...eventually... And now Danlo looked in that direction, too. He remembered that snowy owls mate in the darkest part of deep winter, and so along with this beautiful white bird perched in a tree a hundred feet away, he turned to face the sea as he watched and waited.
