After rereading
The Illearth War I am once again struck by just how creepy Elena can be...not only her unnatural lust/love for her biological father, but also her obsession with Kevin, and her inability to keep the Oath of Peace (the way she keeps stomping the Staff into things and causing minor earthquakes did not clue anyone in that she was not stable?).
I understand that she considers Triock to be her "daddy" rather than Covenant, but it is still unnerving that she sexually and emotionally wants Covenant. As always, I wonder if she hungers after the potential power of the white gold rather than Covenant as an actual human being. At that point in the story he is still rather messed up, after all...
And I wonder if she has an affinity and/or sympathy for the mad (like Kevin) given the madness of her mother (not to mention herself).
And once again I am amazed that the other Lords never catch on to how...warped...she is, considering the group mind meld.
Breaking the Law of Death was a terrible thing...
Even in the Second Chronicles I did not like her, and cheered when Linden reamed her shade.
But I have started feeling sorry for her somewhere along the line. She did really and truly love the Land and hate the Despiser - and having to spend thousands of years in the not-dead limbo (not quite sure how to describe that state of the dead in the Land, but hope you all know what I am trying to say) following her breaking of the Law knowing how badly she messed up, being forced for a few years to be Foul Wife, and being known as a Lawbreaker for the rest of history - that must be literal hell for her. She screwed up royally - but she has paid even more royally.
