I started reading this today, not very far into it, but so far it seems to be vintage character driven Donaldson, though it is a detective story set in our world, rather than a fantasy or science fiction setting.

The folowing are on the back of the book, so I consider them only minor spoilers:

It is about Mick Axbrewder, who was once a private investigator, until he accidentally shot and killed his brother, who had been a police officer. Then "Brew" becomes a drunk...

And then his dead brother's daughter comes up missing...and his former partner and his sister-in-law expect him to sober up and help find the poor kid...

A question here:
Is the city the story is set in (Puerto del Sol) supposed to be Albuquerque? Or like Albuquerque? ******************************************************

Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell

It definately Albuquerque, I as mentioned on another forum:

I have to agree with Variol Farseer who, before he saw Andelian (in the NM Jemez Mts.), at Elohimfest remarked, "...the second I set foot in Albuquerque I knew I'd found Puerta del Sol.". Indeed, the Hegira is exactly like the El Madrid-one of the seediest bars in town-under Lead (not Tin ) street's bridge that spans the railroad yard on it's way to into downtown and then to oldtown. It's also the type of bar that women never enter and slightly an eyebrow is raised if someone gets shot at. Ginny's a tough babe and Mick's a big dude! Amber glows like that can come from Jack Daniels too...

(for those of you who down know where I come from, I live in Albq., NM)
