Now, I know that the Elohim are earthpower incarnate...but what about the Ranyhyn? To me, they seem to have some sort of very strong link to the earthpower, too... Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell

I stole Alynna's list of most prominent Ranyhyn in the series, from Kevin's Watch.com: Lists page, to help jumpstart this topic:

Quote:Brabha: Korik's mount
Drinny: Lord Mhoram"s mount, Hynaril's foal
Huryn: Terrel's mount
Hynaril: Tamarantha and then Mhoram's mount, ?father? or ?mother? of Drinny
Kelenbhrabanal: Father of Horses in Ranyhyn Legend, lay down his life for something? to do with Foul?
Marny: Tuvor's mount
Mehryl: Hile Troy's mount
Myrha: Elena's mount
And now Danlo looked in that direction, too. He remembered that snowy owls mate in the darkest part of deep winter, and so along with this beautiful white bird perched in a tree a hundred feet away, he turned to face the sea as he watched and waited.

Hynaril was Drinny's mother...

The Father of Horses, I believe, sacrifices himself to Lord Foul to save his people from being killed and eaten by Foul's servants, or so I seem to remember...
Foul, of course, broke that bargain. Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell

I have always liked the nice symetry of mother to sons in
Tamarantha-Hynaril
Mhoran-Drinny

How long does a Ranyhyn live? Doesn't Korik have the same mount in both Lord Foul's Bane and Gildenfire?
And I have always been sad that while we know the names of both Tuvor's and Korik's mounts, I have never been able to find the name of Bannor's.

I've looked and looked and have not found any mention at all to the name of Bannor's Ranyhyn. In fact, there isn't even a mention of him ever actually riding his Ranyhyn. We just assume he does because everyone else is.

Osendrea tells Covenant in LFB that they are "creatures of Earthpower" and can hear their rider's call days before the actual calling. I've always been fascinated by this and the story of Kelenbhrabanal. I'm hoping SRD goes into exactly who and what he was in the Last Chrons. He was obviously more then just a horse. Maybe, he was an Elohim or something? Another Appointed..hmmmm "And the glory of the world becomes less than it was."<i></i>

Nice idea, Furls! Didn't Tolkein also do something with the "Father of the Horses" ? <i></i>

You might be thinking about Foamfollower too, Sky, in LFB. He ran between Covenant and Mhoram when they were on the Quest for the Staff of Law.

ShadowFax was one of the Mearas. He was considered the "Father of all Horses." I remember Theoden didn't want Gandalf to take him in the books.... "And the glory of the world becomes less than it was."<i></i>
