I have to agree w/young Covenant. I dont see what everyone loved about Vain. Wow he was balck, and he was kinda cool, but as a character he had almost no depth. And ya dont see too many people raving(pardon the TC pun) about my main man Mhoram... Your affectionate uncle, Screwtape

The Elohim tired 2 kill Vain 4 Pete's sake!! I don't c how people can resist him! Any character that can stand prefectly still on the deck of a Dromond in howling winds and crashing waves has my vote! It's rare 2 find a character that doesn't talk--I found him very refreshing. Mhoram is a great, wise and complex man--and I think we should create a topic about him! So y haven't u mhoram!?! The true human being is the meaning of the universe. He is a dancing star. He is the exploding singularity with infinite possibilities.

A little ways back on this thread,Cov Jr. mentioned the Cavewights being neutral once. I can share a passage that expounds a little. Page 80 LFB,Atiaran is telling a story to the stonedown- about the days before Earthpower and the "Shadow"coming over the Land.Actually, reading this story she tells can probably answer a lot of questions on a lot of threads- both here and on KW. But here's what she says about Cavewights--"the Cavewights smithed and smelted beautiful metals to trade in open friendship with all the people of the Land" Reading (or rereading I should say) this beautiful story she tells is very insightful across many issues of the old days of the Land. Edited by: diamondraught at: 9/20/02 6:31:21 pm

Vain is cool! I always pictured him as about 6 ft tall. Rather like the Haruchai as far as build goes. Vain is my fav character(next to the Ravers) in the entire Chronicles.

So, you like the Ravers, eh? He whose desires have been throttled,
who is independent of root,
whose pasture is emptiness-
signless and free-
his path is as unknowable
as the of birds across the heavens.

= And now Danlo looked in that direction, too. He remembered that snowy owls mate in the darkest part of deep winter, and so along with this beautiful white bird perched in a tree a hundred feet away, he turned to face the sea as he watched and waited.

Ahira, Ahira, he called out silently to the sky. Ahira, Ahira

I found Vain to be an interesting character because he never talks. Until WGW he's this complete mystery -- you know he's very important, but you have no idea why, or what his purpose is, or what he wants...but I'd have to say my favorite character in all six books is Mhoram. Followed closely by Saltheart Foamfollower and Bannor. Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell

Excellent choice! Same with me, and I loved how HLM was in 5 of the 6 books! He whose desires have been throttled,
who is independent of root,
whose pasture is emptiness-
signless and free-
his path is as unknowable
as the of birds across the heavens.
