well...here are my impressions of chapter four...

[spoiler]

I think Linden shares my distrust of the Thomas Covenant and Jeremiah things. She even thinks that they are like puppets dancing and talking to the tune of an unknown puppeteer...

Yet, her bone deep self doubt makes her wonder - and deeply wonder - if the problem is somewhere inside of her rather than inside of them. :?

So she does not use the Staff of Law to try to see or expose them... :?

Her interview with them leaves her literally reeling.

Stave helps her to her room, and reluctantly goes to get the rest of the group...he is acting very un-haruchai-like in his concern...

Linden asks them about the Falls, for the things masquerading as her loved ones (and yes- I know I will look as dumb as dirt if they really are TC and Jeremiah  ) told her that even as she had seen Joan and her madness in the first Fall, the others would have seen Linden in the second. It turns out that no one saw Joan in the first other than Stave. None of the Ramen saw Linden in the second, but Stave saw her riding a Ranyhyn, blazing with wild magic. And Liand, who had been carrying the Staff of Law, saw the deep darkness inside of her. In fact- Liand more than sees her, he temporarily becomes part of her - and thus knows both her passion and her darkness...

Linden nearly falls apart when they are all still willing to be her friends even after that darkness is revealed.

And they say that they have seen how much good she does by committing evil (I would say her healing of the unwilling Stave would fall into this category...)

She tells them of her doubts of the twosome, and says that if they are still who they claim to be, that they no longer love her...

...and in that, the lost love, she understands the haruchai a bit better, in having to give up their women at various times (such as when they became Bloodguard)...and understands what a huge sacrifice Stave has made on her behalf...

And then her friends tell Linden that they went as a group to bathe in Glimmermere. And there, in the lush grass, Anele had been possessed by Covenant again! And that he had cryptic messages for each of them! :faint:

After everyone gets a chance to sleep and eat, Linden goes forth to try to close down the Fall that the demondim are using to connect with the Illearth Stone. She is only able to do so with the help of the ur-viles and waynhim.

And the haruchai tell her that the Covenant thing had not wanted her to even attempt to do this. More treachery, perhaps? :?

I do love how the harucahi hold so much honor for the waynhim...:hearts:

if only the haruchai would stop being so stubborn... :?

[spoiler]

Stave's vision of Linden blazing with wild magic and Liand's perception of her inner darkness while they were in the Fall reminds us again of Desecration -- the image of Linden as another Kevin Landwaster.

Sure, Liand perceives that Linden has it within her "to perform horrors" but so what? Yes, it's no doubt a concern, but everyone also worried about Covenant back when he was the white gold wielder. He also had the potential to be another Kevin Landwaster. His choices determined whether the Land and the Earth would be saved or damned - as it is now with Linden's choices. Well, Covenant did prevail against Foul the last time around, though the cost to himself was high and there's no arguing the Land suffered in the process. But the point is that the Land is still around, and that there are still people willing to fight for its preservation. So I'm cutting Linden some slack because, really, who doesn't have a bit of darkness in them? I can only imagine how much worse I'd do in Linden's place.

The sequence with Linden confronting and smashing the Demondim's caesure is one of those WOW! moments in the Chronicles. The Demondim are so Eeeevil...while the Demondim-spawn (the ur-viles and the Waynhim) are so Cooool. Once again, they come to Linden's aid. Do they rock or what? I mean, using their lore to amplify Linden's percipience so that she could pierce the Demondim's veil of protection around their Fall? Totally wicked.

I am also willing to give Linden slack here. She is filled with darkness, sure - but she has a lot of reason for that. And despite her hellish childhood, she has done her best to grow into an adult who heals and cares and loves. She deserves a hell of a lot of credit for that. And so far, she has certainly done her best to serve the Land. 8)

I can certainly identify with her self doubt as well, much as I would love it if she would touch the trouble twins to see what they are trying to hide. Self doubt can be crippling...

And oh yeah - the waynhim and ur-viles ROCK!!!!! :johnny:
