I recently read this Zelazny novel, which deals with ancient Chinese mythology in a similar way some of his other books deal with other myth systems (Lord of Light and Hundu mythology, Creatures of Light and Darkness with ancient Egyptian mythology, etc.). It is about a warrior and craftsman who faces a great challenge from both demons, mortals, and gods...and the Chinese temple dogs are quite wonderful creatures! Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell

I guess I didn't mention that the main character creates pocket universes inside bottles, which are used as homes by the demons. Some of them even have guardian dragons -- is that cool or what? Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell
