Kruppe! No doubt! But he'll make it look like he's gonna lose. Pust getting all cocky and insulting. Then - WOOSH! "Jack, you dead!"

It's all good.  We are living in a golden age of fantasy right now. 8) With the exception of Midnight Tides (which I despise) , Erikson's series is right on. Could be one of the greatest ever with some editing. R. Scott Bakker rocks (to me anyway). Donaldson is producing what might be his greatest work, and to me he is right up there with Tolkien as someone writing wonderful and intelligent work. :cloud: You have writers like Kay and McKillip who are capable of producing lyrical beauty when they are on top of their game. 8) George R. R. Martin might be in the middle of what might be one of the greatest works that will ever be produced in the genre. 8) Lois McMaster Bujold has switched over from writing great character driven science fiction to writing great romantic character driven fantasy. :) Diana Gabaldan has two more Outlander novels on the way, speaking of good character driven romantic fantasy.

And a lot of the new urban fantasy writers such as Jim Butcher and Patricia Briggs might be lacking depth, but they are hard to beat for sheer fast paced fun. 8) Great popcorn escape reading. :D

I keep hearing great things about some newcomers I have not tried yet like Scott Lynch, Joe Abercrombie, Daniel Abraham, and Patrick Rothfus. :D

Yes, we are living in a golden age, and I for one am ecstatic about it. 8)

The early reviews are starting to come in for Erikson's latest Toll the Hounds and I am really hoping that all of them are wrong when they say that nothing really happens until 800 pages into the book!

Some news from Eriksonland:

Apparently now he is planning on writing two post-book-ten Malazan trilogies - to bring up the series to 16 books, not counting the novellas or anything by Esslemont. So the main series will be the planned ten books, then two trilogies, plus the novellas, plus the books by Esslemont which are also part of the main series along with Erikson's ten cement blocks...What are we looking at now total? It has got to be more than twenty books counting everything. :?

(I do not know if I would have even started reading this series if I had known that to get the whole story I would have to read all of this , including books by his unknown buddy. :| )

Also, sounds like nearly all of book nine will be a thousand page set up for book ten.

But he promises that all of book ten will kick butt! :)

Sounds like he wants to give McCaffrey's Pern, Moorcock's Eternal Champion, and King's Dark Tower some competition... ;)

here is a review I have run into for Toll the Hounds with what appears to be only some more minorish spoilers...

Always, buried in the tissues of his heart and belly, there had burned a deep desire to consume the meat of another animal and to taste the marvelous tang of blood once more. War in Heaven, p. 387.

Having finally read MT, I really disagree with your feelings on it, duchess. Especially with all that happens in BH and RG. Things certainly are different than they were in the first four books, and I can't say I like anything I've ever read more than those four. But the overall story of the Crippled God still prevails. I think the way he's expanded the whole setting, while tying them all in, is phenomenal.
