Tehol is also shipping out as many of the poor as he can out to the islands, so they can have a new start in their lives and be protected from the coming war. Bugg warns him it is probably a generation ot two too late for the genicode survivors to reclaim their cultures, but Tehol is determined to try...

The Azath is dead. Kettle's body is returning to life. The Ceda (High Mage of Letharas) realizes that the Azath is becmong the Hold of death, which was previously missing from their area of the world. The Azath champion takes Kettle on another trip through the past, where she part of the battles between the lizard people whose name I am not even going to try to spell right now, and some draconics. He explains how the Jaghut had frozen everything in ice after the big battle. Thsi twisted the land and its magic, and blocked the dead from moving onwards - which is why this part of the world is craling with zombies and wraiths and ghosts and such. the dead cannot properly move onwards into death.

Tehol's dead thief breaks into the Letharii government financial archives with the help of an army of ghosts.

Tehol and Bugg go out to dinner with one of the Rat Catchers, and the three women from the islands are at the restaurant. they are very pissed off at Tehol for the escape of their sex slave/employee (who has fled them for the dead thief) and a brawl breaks out.
