No. And less interesting, I don't know if it's just me but I think that any intelligent searcher runs a, fairly, similar route. What a wonderful book.

My least favourite of the EarthSea books though...they get progressively better until Tehanu, which is awesome. But yes, some valuable stuff there dressed up as story. (There are plenty of YA books I still reread regularly. )

Michael Tippett, a composer, wrote an opera called A Child of Our Time. It's about Nazi Germany. One line in it is: I would know my shadow and my light. So shall I at last be whole. I agree that Ged couldn't have learned all he did, and couldn't have become all he became, without having come to know and accept all the dark in him. Perpahs none of us can. It's just a shame that such wisdom came at the expense of others. Not sure how far we can take all this stuff. Through what means can I learn about my shadow? I'm not going to go off killing or hurting others, as Ged did. Yeah, accidentally, but that's how he learned. Am I limiting how self-aware I can become by refusing to embrace evil? Seems silly in one way, but true in another.

I don't think you have to embrace it by giving it reign, but I think we have to be aware of the capacity for it within ourselves, and the small ways in which we do express it sometimes.

Sure, take what we can get. But maybe Ged's having actually caused such pain and horror for others is what allows him to forgive others in the future. Like that short story in Tales. I might be a bit less forgiving. Not having come out the other side of such a thing myself, I might be more along the lines of, "There's no excuse for doing yadda yadda."
