Hmm. To be completely off topic here, it is actually a common problem for most highly gifted children (whether they have any other medical conditions or not) to have friends. Well, the problem is that is is hard for them to have/make real friends because they just do not fit in with the other kids. I would think that having a medical condition might make a naturally occurring social problem from the giftedness even worse.

For my two, sports (expecially the wrestling) gave them bonds and relationships with the other children that they might not have otherwise had. And taught them that they are mortal and that they have to work very hard to get to where the other kids already are, not young godlings due to their intelligence.

I have a couple of great books about the problems of gifted children, and if I can find them, I will type in the titles and author names.

So, to try to get back on topic, perhaps part of Ged's problem is that he is just so much more gifted and talented then the other kids of his age - he just doesn't fit in with them. Notice how he gravitates to the older kids for friendships/rivalries.
