OK. I'll have to try harder than that. Besides, good horror isn't about startling. It must be frightening, creepy, ghoulish, dismaying, blood-curdling... life-threatening, perhaps soul-threatening... but also magnetic, compelling, frisson-inducing, wickedly enticing, and can't-put-the-book-down good that it's so bad.
