Well, the vampires in Kim Newman's Anno Dracula are fabulous, though not particularly scary (sequels are The Bloody Red Baron and Judgement of Tears).

Also great are the Lamea in Tim Powers' The Stress of Her Regard, but they're not the traditional type of vampire.

Has anyone read The Golden by Lucius Shepard? I've been meaning to for ages - you gotta figure Shepard would have a cool take on the blood-suckers.

I ahve not read the Shepard one...I read one a while back called Mina (whose author I can't remember) which was pretty good -- it told the struggle of one of the original Dracula's victims to try to return to the normal, restricted life of a Victorian Englishwoman... George R. R. Martin's Fevre Dream has got to be the best vampire book I've ever read, bar none...if you can find it in a used bookstore somepleace, do yourself a favor and get it! ******************************************************

Perhaps I'll come for you myself some night. You ought to see me...my fur is white now, pale as snow, but the stature, the majesty, the power, those have not left me...We are the direwolves, the nightmares who haunt your racial memories, the dark shapes circling endlessly beyond the light of your fires.~George R.R. As a bit of fun trivia, there's a remake of the Salem's Lot miniseries in the works, to be broadcast sometime next year on TNT. Stars Rob Lowe, Samanthis Mathis, Donald Sutherland, Rutger Hauer and James Cromwell.
