I love this movie! Haven't read or seen Twilight so can't compare. But I watched it right after Whiteout and found a lot of the reasons I like it by comparing to that Hollywood fiasco.
Why I like many indie or more-indie-than-indie type films over many Hollywood films.
The scenes are just so much more real life, not staged. If you see a schoolyard fight in a non-Hollywood film it is like the camera crew saw a schoolyard fight happening and ran up to film it. If you see a schoolyard fight in a Hollywood film, you can imagine the director going
Ok you're going to be the mean tough guy
You'll be the wimpy victim
You'll be the right hand man who has moral doubts about what the mean guy is doing
etc.
If you see friends sitting around drinking in a non-Hollywood film, same thing. It is like some friends were sitting around drinking and a camera crew came up and started filming them.
And it took me a while to get used to Oskar, but I liked him and Ellie and wanted to hang out with them.
