John Mellencamp's kid started a Facebook page trying to get his dad to quit smoking. Mellencamp told the kid that if a million people signed up, he'd quit.

I've already pretty much given up TV and red meat. And booze too. Wow. I guess my answer would be yes. But I recognize I'm in the minority....

Hahaha, I'm thinking drugs myself...

(Using pharmaceutical drugs to help me quit I mean...like zyban or something.)

They supposedly have some sort of non-smoking vaccine now, but all of my friends who smoke are afraid to get it - they worry it will change their brain chemistry. One lady I know swears by the needles thing (accupuncture?) to stop smoking. But I am not sure about it, as she always does eventually start smoking again. Stopping Stopping smoking is supposedly one of the hardest things in the world to do... I'm always really glad it is a habit I have never developed.

I'm with you, Duchess -- never tried smoking and have always been really glad. (Boy howdy, I sound boring, don't I? )

MW, I also agree with you that Mellencamp should've quit long since. I believe the article said he has tried in the past but it never took. Nicotine is a miserably addictive substance...

I took a puff or two from a cigarette when I was 8 or 9. It was an attempt to emulate my sister, whom I'd seen smoking. My dad stopped that right away, so I'll always be thankful for that, regardless of what other failings he may have had as a parent. Does Mellencamp's son smoke? If not, that would indicate strong willpower to me - being able to resist following his dad's example (not to mention peer pressure from school mates and others). On the other hand, breathing in second-hand smoke from his dad would be just as bad as if he were smoking himself.

The article didn't say whether the younger Mellencamp smokes. I assume not, since he wants his dad to quit so badly.
