Well, I hope Firefly comes before the film Serenity, as I started watching Firefly tonight. I hope to watch the series, then the film.

I only had time for the long first episode on the first disc, called Serenity. So far, so good...though there were a few mysteries I hope will be cleared up as the series goes on. ******************************************************

I have finished the first disc now. So far I am really enjoying it.

I can see how the mixture of horses/Old West and spaceships could be jarring; but as I was growing up my Dad was a major Old West junky (both movies and books) so I like seeing some new life in that old genre.

Lots of mysteries yet to figure out - what about those battle scenes in the beginning of the first episode? What has been done to that girl? I'm looking forward to the answers being revealed later in the series and the film.

I have been so busy that I haven't yet started on Firefly, but I am hoping to do so soon. "Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?"<i></i>

I have watched both Firefly and Serenity now. My hub was only able to watch a couple of episodes of Firefly and Serenity (opposing work schedules).

I loved both, and he loved what he was able to see.

I think I have to give the edge to Firefly, but that would be choosing between a good thing and a good thing, I would give that edge because the Old West stuff comes through more clearly in the series, and simply because we get to spend more time with the characters over the course of the series. And these are all well developed and interesting characters, well worth spending time with. ******************************************************

Fans of Firefly, a TV series, and Serenity, the movie that's based on the TV series, call themselves Browncoats. June 23 is Joss Whedon's birthday, and to celebrate Mr. Whedon's birthday this last weekend Browncoats all over the world organized charity screenings of Serenity. The charity screenings benefited Equality Now, organized in 1992, an organization that promotes and protects human rights for women all the world. Check the website for more information. taraswizard

Two points when 'space opera' (prose and cinema) first came on the scene its model was 'horse opera'. Many of the pulp SF writers of the 30s and late 40s (for example, Sturgeon, Pohl, Bradbury, etc.) wrote fiction for the Western magazines of the day, too.

When Joss Whedon was an undergaduate student at Wesleyan Univ., Middleton Conn., in the film studies dept., one of his instructors had written a book about the Westerns of Sam Peckinpah.

Sorry this message was really geeky. taraswizard

No, it was on target. Firefly really is a Western (complete to the cattle rustling) set in space. I was sort of sad that Serenity got away from that, though I suppose it was difficult enough to try to get the story line down to two hours (I imagine that they compressed what might have slowly taken a couple of tv seasons to reveal into a two hour film). ******************************************************

I am through disk three of the Firefly DVD's. Definitely officially hooked.

After I get through disk four, I will have to re-watch all 4 DVD's again.

Then I will have to re-watch Serenity.

It's really a shame that more episodes weren't made - such good stories and characters.

I finished watching all the Firefly DVDs last night. Now, I am comparing prices for the Serenity DVD so I can buy it, watch it, and just generally complete my collection.

I agree. Those two must be the two most stubborn people in all of the thousands of moons in that solar system.

Now I want to watch a couple of my favorite Firefly episodes as soon as I get home from work. ******************************************************

I re-watched the first episode of the tv series ("Serenity") when I got home from work today. I appreciated it even more the second time around.

And I just ordered a copy of the Serenity movie. "Does the walker choose the path, or the path the walker?"<i></i>

Ms Mary and Duchess your messages in this thread make me all fuzzy feeling. The Serenity/Firefly love is strong in these two.

Now to hi-jack the thread a little bit (my forum, I'll hijack if I want to). Considering Ms Mary rewatching episode Serenity; FWIW, Whedon's material can be very much that way and looks better on rewatching. Personal experience, on Thursday August 3 our local Chicago Buffy meetup rewatched City of... (Episode 1, season 1 Angel the Series), and I mentioned to several of the other meetupers it had been awhile since I had watched that episode and I'd kinda forgotten how good it was. taraswizard
