Post subject:  Anime

OK, this is gonna sound real lame, but what is anime? And how is it different from the cartoons of my youth, like Augie Doogie, Quickdraw McGraw, Dudley Dooright, Rocky and Bullwinkle. Yes, I know current anime, has really cool computer animation techniques, and maybe some Japanese graphical design sense, not shared by Occidentals. And anime has more sex, violence and volume (the examples I have glanced over at some Cons I have went to were VERY LOUD), than those 50s cartoons. So? And anime is not intended for childern, but neither was Rocky and Bullwinkle. I missed something I think. taraswizard

In the US, Anime is synonymous with Japanese animation (though the japanese refer to all animation as anime). It's the same thing as the animation you're familiar with, but a different style. The eyes are generally larger (something that's stuck there from when early animation like Betty Boop was imported) and there's more still frames - a lot more.

Manga is anime comic books. Hentai is anime porn.

If you're not familiar with Anime, it's worth checking out (most video stores will have at least a few. Suncoast sells 'em by the truckload). It's not everybody's thing, but I enjoy it. ________________

OK, sylvanus you have whetted the apetite of my curiousity, but I have to tell you the examples I have seen on Cartoon network and TechTV have not impressed me very much. They just seem, IMO, loud and a little boring. But maybe the examples offered by these two sources are not the best. From very general knowledge I have heard the name Sailor Moon an apparently popular series, do you have an opinion about those? taraswizard

Yeah, I was gonna suggest both of those, too (I really enjoyed Princess Mononoke). I'm not much of an anime fan, but the other one I did like is Ghost in the Shell, which is more kinda cyberpunk SF. ******************

All good choices. Also check out Cowboy Bebop (preferably the series first, then the movie) for really good sci-fi and Record of Lotus War for traditional D&D-type fantasy (my personal favorite is a series called Samurai Deeper Kyo, but that's pretty hard to get a hold of unless you're dl'ing.) ________________

Cowboy Bebop and Spirited Away, I will have check out. A few of my on-line Buffy friends are big CB fans, I might ask them, too. They also like Uten, Revolutionary Girl.

Blockbuster in a day or two and rentals to be made.

Thanks for everyones feedback. taraswizard

So group, the other night I watched on Starz cable Appleseed, is it anime, and I liked it alot? I presumed it was since one of the main character's name was Hitomi, would that be a man's name in Japan; however, in this piece the character was definitely a woman? Is the Japanese animated adaptation of Dianne Wynne Jones Howl's Moving Castle anime, based on early messages that all Japanes animation is anime it would be? taraswizard

I am not familiar with Appleseed, but Howl's Moving Castle and all of the other wonderful films from its director are definately anime. ******************************************************

My earlier message about was largely ignored, oh well. Since then through my cable's On Demand, I've had a chance to sample some others, and the results have been varied. Example, REvolutonary Girl: Utena, weak plotting and weak narrative and very formulaic, not making much sense as you watch it. Does one ever find out what World Revolution is? Boys Be, weaker narrative and trite plotting and very formulaic, it does make sense.

It got better. Scrapped Princess, very good, narratively complex and strong, Pacifica Casull, . Around the same time I started watching To Heart, which might appear to be a silly little HS drama, but it has robots (Multi HMX12), magic users (Serika Kuresegawa), and a seer (Kotone Himekawa). (BTW, if you're asking it's got a good narrative and strong plots).
