Calibaby and I have begun watching this HBO miniseries on dvd lately.

As with other HBO productions I have seen (such as the miniseries Band of Brothers) this is a first rate production.

It tells the story of the Apollo space missions to the moon (well, the first chapter shoes a bit of the background with the Mercury and Gemini programs). It also gets a bit into the social unrest of the time (the Cold War, the assassinations of leading Americans, the war protests, etc.) and how the space program was one of the few things that gave some Americans a genuine hope for the future ("You have saved the year 1968.").
