While looking for an avatar graphic on the web, I ran across a 19th Century landscape painter named Caspar David Friedrich. I found some of his works to be disturbing, but subtly so - there's nothing grotesque about them. 'Haunting' is maybe a better word.

Some of his works can be viewed here. Morning in the Riesengebirge is particularly moving, and I'm intrigued by Monastery Graveyard in the Snow and Abbey in an Oak Forest (near bottom of page). I also like Eldena Ruin and Cemetery at Dusk.

Another small Friedrich gallery with biographical info. Cross on the Mountain is weird and powerful, and I like Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog so much I used it for my avatar.

Here's an interesting essay on Friedrich, with some more works at the bottom. The Sea of Ice caught my eye here.

Anybody else have a new discovery or an old favorite in the world of visual arts they'd like to share? ******************

I'm partial to Klee, Escher, Miro, Margitte, Monet and Ruisdale myself--and of course the Dadaists, some Dali, Van Eyck and Van Gogh. That daVinci guy wasn't bad either.. *****

Hey, cool, Miro is one of my favorites too!

I also like Pollock, and some of Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth's works. And of course, about a zillion SF/fantasy and comic artists. ******************
