Do u mean outside of Sci-Fi and Fantasy--not hard 2 guess that David Zindell and SRD r my favs! The true human being is the meaning of the universe. He is a dancing star. He is the exploding singularity with infinite possibilities.

2 my fav authors, outside of the Sci-Fi/Fantasy arena r:
Cormack McCarthy (All The Pretty Horses, The Crossing)
Nicolas Evans (The Horse Whisperer, The Loop) The true human being is the meaning of the universe. He is a dancing star. He is the exploding singularity with infinite possibilities.

My favoriteauthor...hmm...I'd have to say Orson Scott Card, just because I've met him and he's an extremely cool guy.

Garth Nix is cool too...as is Philip Pullman...and SRD, of course.

But hey...wasn't there a thread about this in Sci-Fi or Fantasy? Or maybe both?

George R. R. Martin is now one of my all time favs--and I've yet 2 read A Storm of Swords! And now Danlo looked in that direction, too. He remembered that snowy owls mate in the darkest part of deep winter, and so along with this beautiful white bird perched in a tree a hundred feet away, he turned to face the sea as he watched and waited.

Ahira, Ahira, he called out silently to the sky. Ahira, Ahira

For sf/fantasy I'd have to go along with Donaldson, Tolkein, and Martin. Outside I'd have to say Shakespeare and Tolstoy are right up there...

One thing I love about all of you guys is that you're all introducing me to some great authors I've either never read before, or had limited exposure to. And I'm enjoying the experience. Ankh-Morpork people considered that spelling was a sort of optional extra. They believed in it the same way they believed in punctuation; it didn't matter where you put it, so long as it was there.~Terry Pratchett

Hmmmm. I love the works of David Brin and Orson Scott Card, as well as Tanith Lee and Anne Rice.

Donaldson is great.

Zelazny at his best almost can't be beat.

Dennis Potter is amazing. So's Shakespeare.

I can't choose just one! I can't! I won't! AND YOU CAN'T MAKE ME!!!!!!

yah vee can zahir .. vee haff vays offf mvaking jyou talk !!

my partner just got me into some Tannith Lee [Vivia the Vampire] .. and mmm .. pretty hot and heavy stuff .. whatsthatabout?? I'm not sure yet whether I like her stuff or not yet .. I'm hoping something will come out of the last 2 chapters to give the story some meaning ..

Her writing is engaging .. though now I have gotten into it more .. I didnt think much of the first few chapters tho' .. I didnt like the language ie: structure and form .. not her use of expletives

I've narrowed it down to these five:
5)Terry Brooks
4)Anne McCaffrey
3)Phillip Pullman
2)J.R.R. Tolkien
and...1)Stephen R. Donaldson

I will not choose just one!!!
