People are still dying in Darfur. Millions are not receiving adequate food. Why aren't more people angry about the situation? Why isn't more being done? Are you personally aware of the situation and latest news there? ajws.org/index.cfm?sectio...age_id=598 www.savedarfur.org/situation/current Savedarfur.org and the American Jewish World Service are sponsoring a rally in NY next month to draw attention to the situation in Darfur. I will not be able to go, unfortunately, but my son plans to be there. What are your thoughts? What do you think can be done to help the people of Darfur? MsMary, If your question is for answer of analysis, IMO, the reasons are the same as the they were for the first world's ignorance and lack of action regarding the Hutu vs Tutsi civil war in Rwanda. BTW, the world continues to ignore the Tamil vs Sinhalese conflict, unless the Fighting Tigers blow up the Indian Prime Minister, in Sri Lanka, and that conflict has been ongoing for at least 35 yrs. The situation in Darfur is spilling out into the neighboring countries, such as Chad, and they are begging for help. Hey Cail. Yeah, Darfur doesn't have anything that the western world wants. Nothing to gain from going in and doing anything, so why make the expenditure. It begs the question I've asked before though. At what point does "help" become "interference"? Darfur is, for all intents and purposes, in the middle of a civil war. Is it the UN's job to end civil wars? I mean, I'm with you that what's going on there is horrible, but is it the job of the world to get involved with other country's internal issues (no matter how hottible they are)? <i></i> |

Both international and American law requires that action is taken in cases of genocide. (Damn, I really feel sorry for the poor whipping boy UN. Nobody is willing to give it the power to carry out its mandate, and when it doesn't, everybody points out how useless it is.) But Cail does have a point. And it's one that I would agree with in almost all instances. Look what inevitably happens when one country gets involved in the internal politics of another. I have a sneaking suspicion that this would be another case of "damned if you do...damned if you don't." That said though, in cases of genocide I think better to be damned for doing. Then at least you can point to the lives that you saved. On the other hand, the careful international intervention in the Balkans did eventually calm things down there, and unquestionably saved a lot of lives. I think part of the intervention is how it is done, as well as by whom it is done.
