He was a great choice as envoy. As much as North Korea loudly scorns the rest of the world, they are often also like a toddler acting up for parental attention. A former POTUS had enough status that Kim was willing to talk with him and both parties gained face - Kim for hosting a well known former POTUS who still has strong ties to the highest levels of US government, and Clinton for acting as envoy in such a high stakes matter. I seem to remember Obama stating in the elections that if he could make good use of former President Clinton in diplomatic matters he would. |

I saw one (and only one, so it might have been a mistake) reference in news stories that Clinton is a partner with Gore in the company that employed the women. Which would explain how Clinton's name came up for the mission at all. Other than his wife being too much of a gummint official to get involved, and the North Koreans' rejection of Gore as not being enough of a rock star. |
