Not sure if this is right category or not. Read this last winter one of Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series (Lunatic Cafe), and not so impressed. And then this last week I have started A Kiss of Shadows, which is the first book of her series covering Meredith Gentry, the pseudonym of Meredith NicEssus Fey princess of the Unseelie Court. And I am liking this book. I am over 2/3s the way through this book and I will her second Meredith Gentry book Caress of Twilight. Right after I finish it.

Comments, anyone Edited by: taraswizard at: 7/11/03 4:41 pm

come on u guy's help taraswizard out here! Surely some1 here has read Hamilton? I haven't but I read on the A Song of Ice and Fire board that some of her stuff is kinda racy... And now Danlo looked in that direction, too. He remembered that snowy owls mate in the darkest part of deep winter, and so along with this beautiful white bird perched in a tree a hundred feet away, he turned to face the sea as he watched and waited.

Ahira, Ahira, he called out silently to the sky. Ahira, Ahira

I've not read any of her stuff, but her Anita Blake books appear to have quite a following...

I recently read an indepth review of the Anita Blake books. I was told by some people who are familiar with them that the first 6 (soemtimes 7 depending on who you ask) books are great fun. But everyone in on the discussion seemed to hate the later books, as they say they devolve into plotless porn.

I am wondering if the book Taras tried is one of the later ones?

I am tempted to start the first one, called Guilty Pleasures, but I must keep the warning from many people to bail on the series after the first 6 or 7 books... ******************************************************

I am not sure if it is clear or not? LK Hamilton, native of St. Louis area, is writting two series. They are not set in the same fictional universes. One is probably more well known than the other.

1) Anita Blake series. Starts with book Guilty Pleasures 1993, continues through Lunatic Cafe 1996 and the latest volume is Incubus Dreams summer 2004. There are AFAIK 13 books in the series. Anita's universe is vampires, weres, witches, necromancers who all exist openly and otherwise it's our world. This series of books is far more popular than the next series.

2)Meredith Gentry series. Starts with A kiss of shadows continues with Caress of Twilight. And currently has 4 or 5 volumes. Meredith's universe is sidhe, fey, Seelie court, Unseelie court and lots of magic. Except for these elements again Meredith's world is the same as ours. And to be contrarian I like these better than Anita Blake.

During her career Laurell has written Star Trek and Ravenloft, too.

FWIW, last summer at an author signing in the Chicago burbs Ms. Hamilton listed as one of her influences one of my favorite vampire movies Vampire circus.

The ones I heard discussed were the Anita Blake ones.

But I will keep my eye out at the library for the other series as well, since Taras likes it better. ******************************************************

Not so sure if my judgement regarding Meredith Gentry vs. Anita Blake is a valid one to make your decision on. FWIW, IIRC Myste or Lorlelei on the watch has read them, too.

Everyone I have talked to is always a little amazed I like Meredith Gentry better. However, I think I compare Anita to Buffy and IMhO that is not a comparison that Anita does well on, and that's what spoils Anita a little bit for me. taraswizard
