Why? Pray tell... The true human being is the meaning of the universe. He is a dancing star. He is the exploding singularity with infinite possibilities.

It's an odd problem. I read all of Tolkien's stories, but the Simarillion was, as odd as it may seem, the only one that bored me to tears. I think it could have been its stark need for more Tolkien and less Christopher.

hmmm....perhaps u could start a controvesial topic in Fenestering Through Tolkien called "This is why the Sil bored me 2 tears"? The true human being is the meaning of the universe. He is a dancing star. He is the exploding singularity with infinite possibilities.

The Pillars of Creation by Terry Goodkind (is that how you spell his name?) I somehow made it the end, mainly because I wanted the main character, this sadistic raping murdering creep named Oba or something like that to die a hideous death. This guy blew up live chickens like balloons and stuff like that. ICK!!!! my sister, o my sister! There's the cause on 't. Whether we fall by ambition, blood, or lust, Like diamonds we are cut with our own dust -- John Webster's "The Duchess of Malfi", first performed in England in 1614

The Room of Vision. I wrote that one myself and I had to burn it. It was so stupid!

And to the people/person who thinks the Sword of Shannara is no good, I love that book!

I wasn't aware that Christopher had anything to do with The Silmarillion. Either way, I like it a lot! Sword of Shannara too! Fist and FaithEdited by: Highdrake at: 3/16/03 8:02:06 pm

Hey there.. just thought I'd jump in here.. and get my feet wet....
As for the Silmarillion...I haven't read it yet, but I intend to because alot of the credit for the putting-together of that book goes to Guy Gavriel Kay, one of my favorite authors.. EVER. I feel that I won't like it much for some reason,but I managed to get through the LOTR trilogy, FINALLY... it's odd, it took me years to read.. I read, like 3 or 4 books a week, at least, but for some reason I HATED LOTR, I just had a hard time getting through book one, but by the end of book two, I was intrigued beyond belief, and I cried at the end.I don't often cry over books, so that is high praise.. anyway.. back on topic..
I definitely will have to go with any of the first three Shanarra books.. funny thing is, I loved them the first time I read them, but then I moved onto better things, I suppose.. tried a re-read, and couldn't manage it.
As for Jordan.... I have not read a WORD of ANY of his books, lest I become one of the sniveling entities paying 30 dollars a pop on release day waaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy too often.
I will defend Eddings any day, not necessarily the best or most original story teller, but I love his characters.
RA Salvatore. will he ever end the stupid cattie-brie/drizzt saga and move on to better things, like Entreri and Jarlaxle?that might actually be interesting, but until he does, I won't pay for his soap-opera dragged out crap.
hmmm.. I'm feeling awfully opinionated, and this is rather long for my first post... but I will be around...

I keep hearing so many horrid things about some book called The Fifth Sorceress (whose author's name escapes me) that I am almost ready to read it to see if its as ghastly as I keep hearing!
Then again, I keep thinking about a possible Plan Nine from Outer Space effect, where it might be so awful as to be very funny... Our lives are the songs that sing the universe into existence.~David Zindell

One fantasy book I could not finish was The Elfstones of Shannara. I made it through the first book OK although I didn't really enjoy it. The cover art didn't help, either.

But the worst book I've ever read is not a fantasy book, it is The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield. It was really popular in the mid 90's. Has anyone ever read it? I hope I don't offend you if you like it. Man, what a disappointment.

Out flew the web and floated wide;
The mirror crack'd from side to side;
"The curse is come upon me," cried
The Lady of Shalott.

I've never read that one, Lorien...

But here is a review of that book I just mentioned, The Fifth Sorceress. It sounds so awful I nearly want to read it just to see if it really is that bad...
