I stole this ideal from ASOIAF--and there is now a similar thead in Gen. Sci-Fi:
1. Thomas Covenant
2. Randolph Carter-The Dream Quest of the Unknown Kadath
3. Vain-TCTC
4. Lord Mhoram-TCTC
5. Aragorn & Gandalf-LOTR
6. Corwin-The Chrons of Amber
7. Ged-The Earthsea Books
8. King Kull
9. Elric of Melinborne
10. Artagel-Mordant's Need & Aslan-The Chrons of Narnia
Hon mention: 2 The Rayhnyn, The Bloodguard, The Giants--and many, many other characters, including The Land itself! in TCTC

1. Lyra Belacqua/Silvertongue
2. Gandalf
3. Saltheart Foamfollower
4. Sam Gamgee
5. Thomas Covenant
6. Artagel
7. Rincewind
8. Lirael

And then it's a toss-up between my second and third favorite characters from the books all of the above characters are from. I can't choose some over the others.

Aslan is the lion--if he were loin he might be Wilbur from Charlotte's Web another fine fantasy character! I aslo like Stuart Little, Paddington Bear, Clifford the Big Red Dog and Curious George quite alot myself! The true human being is the meaning of the universe. He is a dancing star. He is the exploding singularity with infinite possibilities.

U could probably start a Children's books topic in The Manifold. This is, basically, a straight Sci-Fi and Fantasy book discussion board--we can link 2 RPGs and MUDs and as u can see we r trying 2 help Necromage develope his Amber game, but we r not a gaming site. The theme of this board is based on David Zindell's Neverness series--if u go 2 the Glossary in Journeymen Die/Falling 2 Neverness: Zindell many things may become clearer 2 u. You r free to suggest the creation of any forum u like in How 2 Improve Ahira's Hangar/Snowy Owl chat and may start any, acceptable, topic in the appropriate forum--u can also become a moderator, if u like. This is, basically, a "creates it's own self board" Just no Flaming, foul language, backstabbing or direct gaming--that's all. We try 2 stay away from Star Wars of Star Trek--within the Sci-Fi forum (unless it's a Star Wars author like Timothy Zahn or Alan Dean Foster, say). But u can create those type of TV/Movies topics in The Manifold if u wish! The true human being is the meaning of the universe. He is a dancing star. He is the exploding singularity with infinite possibilities. Edited by: danlo60 at: 10/7/02 1:18:28 pm

5. Gandolf

This was a hard list. That's why it has taken me so long to answer.

In alphabetical order:

Elric
Faran Gaton Nekron (from Lightbringer Trilogy)
Finrod Felagund
Frodo
Húrin
Ineluki (Memory, Sorrow and Thorn)
Josua (Memory, Sorrow and Thorn)
Maal Dweb (Clark Ashton Smith)
Shadowthrone (Malazan Book of the Fallen)
Toc the Younger (Malazan Book of the Fallen)

Gerald Tarrant from Coldfire Trilogy would be on this list, except for that he starts to suck when he stops being evil.

I wonder what a psychologist would make of these choices...

Now that I think it, I for some reason really liked Warden Dios and think he should have been included. But I don't know whom to drop and so maybe I am not dropping anyone... I said this was a hard list to write. (And I forgot about Raistlin and Haplo too and who knows whom else.) Donaldson is a great writer and writes characters well but his main characters don't tend to be too likable and his nicest minor characters like Mhoram don't really get developed that well. I chose characters on the basis of the combined coolness/likability factor while there is a positive correlation with that and the general book quality factor, the correlation is less than one.
