It's so hard picking just ten!
Tyrion Lannister, Ned Stark, Dany Targaryen, and Jon Snow from ASOIAF.
Lord Mhoram and Bannor and Foamy and Brin and TC from Donaldson
(hey - do Dany's three dragons and Jon's white direwolf Ghost count as seperate characters, or can I "roll them" into Dany and Jon?)
Tehanu from Earthsea, and heck, can't leave out Ged and Tenar.
Shaggydog
Maurice the cat from discworld
I like Min from Wheel of Time. She's the only nice female in all of those thousands of pages.
Oh, the Red Viper. Coolest guy around!
ooops. I'm way over ten already...
But I have to Eowyn from Tolkein. And Luthien and Beren. And Gandalf. And Aragorn.
it's too hard to pick just ten!!
And I can't leave out Mara of the Acoma from Janny Wurtz, or Aslan from Narnia... my sister, o my sister! There's the cause on 't. I think I'll replace Ineluki on my list with Waylander. I knew I had forgotten someone.

I assume Waylander is from M, S & T as well?

No, he's from Waylander and its sequels. They are sword and sorcery books by David Gemmell and part of the greater Drenai series. They are the kind of books in which mighty heroes face insurmountable odds, but those heroes have considerably more depth than Conan and the stories avoid simple solutions and the black-and-white worldview while being also fun-to-read pageturners. The books are by far the best modern sword and sorcery I have found.

I'd agree with foamy's list, except I'd replace Sam with Aragorn. All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost.
The old that is strong does not whither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

Just gonna toss in a couple of my own pennies here:

(in no particular order)

1. Thomas Covenant
2. Tyrion Lannister
3. Ged Sparrowhawk
4. Mhoram
5. Davos Seaworth
6. Elys of Witch World
7. Dr. Prunesquallor
8. Linden Avery
9. Corwin of Amber
10. Eowyn of Rohan

I've limited myself to novels I've actually read, naturally. "GOD created Man in his own image. Man, being a gentleman, returned the courtesy." -Voltaire

Aw man! I just read one of the greatest books I've ever read. The Hound and the Falcon, by Judith Tarr. I'm adding Brother Alfred and Thea to my list now. They're on the top-ten list too. yay!! If I had a social life, you'd all be dead.
