So I have read the first two books (
Mistborn: The Final Empire and
The Well of Ascension) and have just started the third (
The Hero of Ages) in Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy.
So far I am really enjoying them.
They are set on a ruined and dying world; beset by ashfall and endless mists, amd huge racial/class divides.
He does deep well drawn characters, flawed but heroic - facing terrible challenges and odds.
The magic is very unique - the mages swallow metals and burn them for predictable superpowers that run out when the metals run out. Another breed of human can use metals to store superpowers or information.
The whole premise is fairly unique as well -
what would happen if the bad guys win???He also has a depth of content in that characters must constantly question their own motives and powers. Some of them might have superhuman powers when burning their metals - but they must always question their usage of those powers, as they can create great chaos and harm with them.
Not to mention - how do you handle it if you are so powerful people start to think you are a religious figure?
So lots of butt kicking and political maneuvering combined with good plotting and deep characters.
So far lots of win, though I delay final judgement until I get a chance to finish the third book.
