Just found out that Daniel Abraham, he of epic fantasy, will have an upcoming urban fantasy called Unclean Spirits: Book One of the Black Sun's Daughter written by MLN Hanover in late 2008. It is listed under that title and Hanover as the author's name at Amazon.

Supposedly, according to internet gossip, Jaqueline Carey, she of epic fantasy and alternate history fantasy, will be having a vampire/urban fantasy book coming out as being written by an alternate name in 2009. I have heard a couple of different titles for the book (including Santa Olivia) and a couple of possible pen names, including Madeline Easton. Amazon shows nothing for the titles or pen nemaes, so this might all be urban legend.

It's sort of explainable regarding Carey since he current fiction has a very distinct 'flavor' to it. Compare Anne Rocqualaire to Anne Rice, if folks were to read the Vampire books as by Rocqualaire would they not have a whole different set of expectations. I think that explains Carey's need for a pen name if she starts writing something that's much different from Kushiel

Actually, when the werewolf (it turned out to be werewolves rather than the vampires the original rumors stated) book by Carey eventually came out, she did publish it under her usual name. Santa Olivia was a pretty good postapocalyptic science fiction novel set on the US/Mexican border.

But given how different it was from her Kushiel books, I can see why either she or her publisher might have considered publishing it under a pen name.
